Regardless, verifying the COVID status of individuals will likely be impossible or impractical. \u00a0 So we must examine passive methods for minimizing the threat of COVID in these indoor environments. \u00a0Ventilation is perhaps the best candidate for this as it is unintrusive and universally applicable using mundane, proven, off-the-shelf technologies and techniques, as described in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsws.org\/en\/articles\/2021\/05\/07\/sdrf-m07.html\">interview<\/a> and associated Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marwa_zaatari\/status\/1397320368004681729\">thread<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/professor\/drsmith\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/444\/2021\/05\/noun_ventilation_54556.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/professor\/drsmith\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/444\/2021\/05\/noun_ventilation_54556.png\" alt=\"Ventilation (The Noun Project)\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>Ventilation Improvements<\/h4>\n<p>Anybody that has been in a typical Canadian primary or secondary school in the middle of June knows how terrible the ventilation is. \u00a0While adding stand-alone fans and air filters in the classroom was a good ad-hoc approach in 2020 when we were coming to grips with the reality of COVID, it is no longer acceptable as the only way to improve ventilation.<\/p>\n<p>Properly designed and installed HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Cooling) systems, capable of exchanging \"dirty\" air for fresh, outside air is necessary. \u00a0Nothing short of this is acceptable if our goal is to reopen our schools -- and therefore our economies -- in September 2021.<\/p>\n<p>But installation of HVAC is not sufficient. \u00a0We need to monitor, in real time, the status of the air in our classrooms to ensure that when the ventilation fails we can be alerted to that fact and then act to keep our children and schools staff safe.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, we need to measure the quality of the air in our classrooms.<\/p>\n<h4>Ventilation Verification: CO2 Sensors<\/h4>\n<p>I am advocating for the addition of CO2 sensors to all classrooms and offices in our schools. \u00a0Carbon Dioxide (CO2) measurement is commonly used by ventilation experts to determine the \"freshness\" of air. \u00a0The consensus is that a level of CO2 between 400 and 800 ppm (parts per million) is the threshold for acceptable fresh air (sources: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashrae.org\/File%20Library\/Technical%20Resources\/Technical%20FAQs\/TC-04.03-FAQ-35.pdf\">1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013935121003868\">2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pilotonline.com\/news\/health\/vp-nw-covid-co2-measurement-20210218-ff3gjwe3ijaarbj4j7ca7nfyqe-story.html\">3<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/smartenergy.illinois.edu\/best-covid19-practices\/\">4<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0378778821001663\">5<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>CO2 sensors are inexpensive, easy to install and operate. \u00a0Many look like the thermostats that we see in homes, schools and offices. \u00a0There are many sources of CO2 sensors, including:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/professor\/drsmith\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/444\/2021\/05\/noun_carbon-dioxide-sensor_3510865-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1523\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/professor\/drsmith\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/444\/2021\/05\/noun_carbon-dioxide-sensor_3510865-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"128\" height=\"128\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airq.ca\">AirQ<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/aranet4.com\">Aranet4<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/buildingcontrols.honeywell.com\/CO2-Sensors\/Sensor-Zio-Lite-Wall-Modules\">Honeywell<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.extech.com\/categories\/air-quality-meters\/carbon-dioxide\">Extech.com<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These sensors are cheap. They're available now. \u00a0They're easy to install. \u00a0They do the job. \u00a0We should install them in every classroom, in every communal indoor space. \u00a0In doing so we will be able to help everyone make informed decisions about how and when to use indoor spaces safely.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Note: CO2 sensors measure Carbon<strong> Diox<\/strong>ide. \u00a0These are different than the normal Carbon <strong>Mono<\/strong>xide (CO) sensors that many of us already have in our homes alongside our smoke detectors.
