Supporting the Next Generation of Scientific Thinkers

More than 160 students from across the region came together at this year’s York Region Science and Technology Fair to present work grounded in hands-on research and inquiry. Projects explored complex challenges spanning health, environment, and emerging technologies, including a computational model for testing early-stage medical treatments, an AI system for detecting signs of skin cancer, and a flood-mapping tool desgined to better assess climate risk. The breadth of work reflected thoughtful engagement with real-world problems and a clear commitment to using research as a tool for understanding and responding to them. Connected Minds was proud to continue its support of the  fair and to be part of an environment where young researchers could test ideas, share their work, and engage directly with others. In creating opportunities like this, Connected Minds is also investing in how emerging technologies are explored and understood in relation to the people and communities they will impact.

These early experiences play a formative role in how students begin to see themselves within research, not only as learners, but as contributors to broader scientific and societal conversations, something reflected in the strong participation from students, families, and the broader community throughout the day. Early engagement with research can influence how young people approach science and collaboration, as well as how they understand their role in addressing future challenges, particularly those Connected Minds is exploring at the intersection of human behaviour, technological systems, and broader societal change. These moments of exploration and exchange are where new ways of thinking begin to take shape.

Through continued support of initiatives like the York Region Science and Technology Fair, Connected Minds is helping to build more inclusive and interdisciplinary pathways into research. Creating space for emerging voices ensures that future innovation is shaped by a broader range of perspectives, experiences, and ideas, strengthening the foundation for research that is both impactful and socially responsive.
