Often it\u2019s because they are the parent who spends the most time with the children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOften if there is a woman in the household, she takes over that part of the parenting,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/arm\/andreaoreilly.html\">Andrea O\u2019Reilly<\/a>, a professor in York\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/laps\/wmst\/\">School of Women\u2019s Studies<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/laps\/\">Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies <\/a>and founder &amp; director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/arm\/\">Association for Research on Mothering<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Women are typically the family CEO, in charge of remembering who got which shots and setting up play dates. Having \u201cthe talk\u201d falls into that realm. \u201cThe talk is part of a larger paradigm of gender. Until we dislodge that, women will probably be the ones to have \u2018the talk\u2019. I try to de-gender caregiving, but it\u2019s a hard sell,\u201d O\u2019Reilly says.<\/p>\n<p>She believes \"the talk\" is declining in importance in any case. \u201cWe live in such a sex-saturated culture. Kids know about sex long before children 10, 20, 30 years ago did,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Children want information about sex, according to a study of 1,200 Toronto teens released last summer.
