Industry mentors were on hand\u00a0to offer\u00a0teams advice and guidance.\u00a0Each team\u00a0consisted of\u00a0two students working with product inventors and a mentor for a chance to win more than\u00a0$17,000 in prizes.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"8\" width=\"200\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100304\/YFile_biotech_team_1(1).jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"229\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Above: From left, Gavin Zealey (contest judge), scientist Arjen Bogaards and MBA students Dilip Chary and Saif Mohamed<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The project, which started last fall, saw teams work with the\u00a0inventors to\u00a0learn about the product and then create a\u00a0commercialization plan before Nov. 29, 2009. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the final stage of the competition, three shortlisted\u00a0teams pitched their invention commercialization plans to a panel of judges in a session that resembled an episode from \u201cDragons' Den\u201d, the popular CBC Television venture-capitalist show. Industry experts\u00a0Gavin Zealey,\u00a0executive director of\u00a0corporate development for sanofi pasteur Ltd.; Borys Chabursky, founder and president of SHI Consulting Inc.; and Janet Lambert, president &amp; CEO with Lambert BioConsulting, served as\u00a0the competition's judges. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The winners of the 2009 sanofi pasteur Healthcare\u00a0&amp; Biotechnology\u00a0Venture Challenge are: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Sono Pharmaceuticals Inc., which placed first for its venture involving photodynamic therapy\u00a0and sonodynamic therapy\u00a0to produce an immune-therapeutic response to treat certain cancers.\u00a0The team includes scientific entrepreneur Arjen Bogaards\u00a0and MBA students\u00a0Dr. Dilip Chary (who is also a family practitioner)\u00a0and\u00a0Saifuddin Tajuddin Mohamed. The product, named EyesIQ, is a\u00a0diagnostic tool for scanning, storing and retracing pathologists' image data. The team included scientist Herman Lo and MBA students Aravind Petlu and Nilotpala Jena. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The team awarded third place and a cash prize of $2,500 was J. Strupat Technologies Ltd. for a portable pandemic ventilator\u00a0life-critical system that provides mechanical\u00a0assistance to individuals who are unable to breathe properly due to infection or physical damage.
