{"id":31224,"date":"2010-03-08T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-08T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2010\/03\/08\/osgoode-hall-law-school-appoints-professor-lorne-sossin-as-new-dean-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T14:38:00","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T19:38:00","slug":"osgoode-hall-law-school-appoints-professor-lorne-sossin-as-new-dean-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2010\/03\/08\/osgoode-hall-law-school-appoints-professor-lorne-sossin-as-new-dean-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Osgoode Hall Law School appoints Professor Lorne Sossin as new dean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[%ArtFullText%]--><\/p>\n<p>York University has appointed Professor Lorne Sossin as dean of its Osgoode Hall Law School.<\/p>\n<p>Sossin, who most recently taught at the University of Toronto\u2019s Faculty of Law, will begin a <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100308\/Sossin_Lorne_clip.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"205\" height=\"276\" align=\"right\" \/>five-year term on July 1.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Right: Lorne Sossin<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Prior to joining the University of Toronto, where he served as associate dean\u00a0 in the Faculty of Law from 2004 to 2007, Sossin was a faculty member at Osgoode Hall Law School and an associate-in-law at Columbia Law School in New York City. He is also a former litigation lawyer with Borden &amp; Elliot (now Borden Ladner Gervais) and a former law clerk to the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so pleased that Professor Sossin has accepted our offer to become the next dean of Osgoode and I\u2019m very much looking forward to working with him,\u201d said President &amp; Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri. \u201cHe brings many strengths that will help build York\u2019s reputation and ensure that our students receive the best legal education in Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sossin holds doctorates in law from Columbia University and in political science from the University of Toronto. His teaching interests span administrative law, public administration, professional regulation, civil litigation, ethics and professionalism and legal process. <span>He received a 2008-2009 Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations\u00a0Award for Teaching Excellence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\"I'm thrilled to be coming home to Osgoode,\u201d Sossin said. \u201cI look forward to working with faculty, staff, students and alumni to further enhance Osgoode's leadership and innovation in legal education.\"<\/p>\n<p>Shoukri also acknowledged the dedication of Osgoode\u2019s interim dean, Jinyan Li.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to thank Professor Li for her steady hand and leadership during this process,\u201d Shoukri said.<\/p>\n<p>Sossin will succeed former Osgoode Dean Patrick Monahan, who has taken on a new role as York's v<span>ice-president academic &amp; provost.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>York University has appointed Professor Lorne Sossin as dean of its Osgoode Hall Law School.
