{"id":31240,"date":"2010-03-19T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-19T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2010\/03\/19\/glendon-profs-new-spanish-language-book-looks-at-human-playfulness-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T14:38:08","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T19:38:08","slug":"glendon-profs-new-spanish-language-book-looks-at-human-playfulness-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2010\/03\/19\/glendon-profs-new-spanish-language-book-looks-at-human-playfulness-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Glendon prof's new Spanish language book looks at human playfulness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[%ArtFullText%]--><\/p>\n<p>The main focus for Alejandro Zamora, a professor in Glendon\u2019s Department of Hispanic Studies, is the study of the modern novel, including its philosophical and social issues, which he explores in his recently published book.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.peterlang.com\/Index.cfm?vID=430031&amp;vHR=1&amp;vUR=2&amp;vUUR=1&amp;vLang=E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jugar por amor propio: <span>Personajes l\u00fadicos de la novela moderna<\/span><\/a><\/em> (<em>Playing for Self Esteem: <\/em><em>Playful Characters in the Modern Novel<\/em>) (Peter Lang Publishing, 2009) was published <span>as part of the European Union\u2019s academic publication series, European University Studies. It is based on Zamora\u2019s 2006 PhD thesis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100317\/AlejandroZamora(1).jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"175\" height=\"249\" align=\"left\" \/>Through the works of some of the most important modern novelists, such as Andr\u00e9 Gide, Italo Calvino, Witold Gombrowicz, Julio Cort\u00e1zar, Milan Kundera and others, this book is a literary exploration of human playfulness as an affirmation of authenticity and self-esteem. These human attributes are juxtaposed with the utilitarian, pragmatic and institutional dimensions of everyday life and interpersonal relations in contemporary societies.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jugar por amor propio<\/em> is an important contribution to the development of comparative literature in Spanish language. \u201cLiterature has a cognitive potential,\u201d says Zamora. \u201cIt is an extraordinary tool for the understanding of cultures. It also provides a unique insight into important issues of the human experience \u2013 its complexity, its ambiguity, its paradoxes. A comparative system of literary analysis is by its nature multidisciplinary, enabling us to examine writings from psychological, philosophical, sociological, historical, as well as other perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zamora's next major undertaking is the mounting of a trilingual, comparative, interdisciplinary conference on the Glendon campus, from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, titled\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mexicoensusrevoluciones.ca\/\">Mexico in its Revolutions<\/a><em>.<\/em> The conference is to commemorate and reflect on the bicentennial of Mexican independence of 1810, and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution of 1910.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100317\/\/AlejandroZamoraInOffice.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" align=\"right\" \/><strong>Right: Alejandro Zamora<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe conference also provides an opportunity to examine those <em><span>other<\/span><\/em> Mexican revolutions, which have occurred or are currently taking place at the margin of the nation\u2019s dominant narratives, at the periphery of nationalistic discourses that assign specific identities for Mexican-ness, at the borders and edges of well-defined and visible systems of power,\u201d says Zamora.<\/p>\n<p>Zamora is currently completing research on childhood and literature, and is writing a book-length essay on this topic. His research for the project took him to the National Film Institute of Madrid in the summer of 2008. While there, he watched\u00a0three to four\u00a0movies a day in order to compare the idea of Spanish children in movies made during the Franco era \u2013 Catholic, conservative, patriarchal \u2013 with those of the post-Franco era, portrayed with all the ambiguities, the questioning and wonderment that children display.<\/p>\n<p>Why study Spanish language and literature? \u201cBecause literature is much more than just a collection of stories,\u201d says Zamora. \u201cIn fact, literature reveals some of the most intimate aspects of a country and its society, culture, history and people.\u201d As for learning the Spanish language, \u201c\u2026it is the\u00a0third-largest language group in the world and thus very useful in the global workplace. It is also the necessary key to fully access an extraordinary culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zamora brings his experience in teaching, journalism, professional and fiction writing to Glendon as a specialist in comparative literature. He examines literature in Spanish, as well as<span> French, Polish and Finnish<\/span>. In addition, Zamora teaches a Spanish language course with French as the reference language, affirming the trilingual nature of Glendon's Hispanic Studies Program.<\/p>\n<p>He has worked as a journalist for Mexican newspapers,\u00a0including a weekly column, <em>La ciudad y los libros<\/em> (<em>The City and Books<\/em>), from 1996 to 2000, for which he received the Provincial Journalism Award of Michoac\u00e1n.
