Hons. \u201978, MFA \u201986), York\u2019s associate vice-president, academic learning initiatives, has published a major new work in the annals of Canadian dance.<\/p>\n<p>Her book, <a title=\"The Ballet Class more information\" href=\"http:\/\/secure.hostdeziners.com\/www_theshoeroom_ca\/store\/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=2_51&amp;products_id=134\"><em>The Ballet Class: A History of Canada's National Ballet School<\/em>, <em>1959-2009<\/em><\/a>, traces the conception and growth of the National Ballet School (NBS),\u00a0one of the world\u2019s foremost training institutions for aspiring young dancers and teachers. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100514\/NSFS_launch.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"345\" height=\"350\" align=\"right\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Right: Norma Sue Fisher-Stitt<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>The Ballet Class<\/em> is organized following the structure of an actual ballet class, with chapter subtitles named after traditional ballet exercises such as the <em>pli\u00e9<\/em> and <em>rond de jambe<\/em>, building up to the <em>grand allegro<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Each chapter starts with a definition of the ballet term as a metaphor for the topic at hand. Thus <em>adage<\/em>, a term embracing slow, controlled movements that build strength and coordination, introduces \u201cThe Delicate Balance of Growth\u201d, a chapter outlining the school\u2019s growing pains in the early years and the push and pull between academic and artistic demands. Pirouettes \u2013 dazzling spins that require great balance and focus to execute \u2013 aptly heralds the chapter titled \u201cThe Challenges of Boys and Deficits\u201d, about two perennial problems: a dearth of male dancers and a dearth of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Interviews and direct quotes from conversations and letters by National Ballet School\u00a0luminaries pepper the book. Featured personalities include Celia Franca, the visionary founder of the National Ballet of Canada and co-founder of the school; the formidable Betty Oliphant, the school\u2019s co-founder and first artistic director, and Mavis Staines, the current artistic director; independent modern dance icon and National Ballet School\u00a0instructor Peggy Baker; former NBC principal dancers Nadia Potts and Vanessa Harwood; and Grant Strate, the founding chair of\u00a0the Department of Dance in York's Faculty of Fine Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Readers can put faces to many of the names thanks to the book\u2019s rich collection of archival photos from performances, classes and landmark events in the life of the school.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/finearts\/faculty\/profs\/fisherst.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fisher-Stitt<\/a> herself was a student at the National Ballet School\u00a0from grade 7 to 12, during the tenure of Betty Oliphant. She subsequently joined the National Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet, touring throughout North America and Europe before leaving the company in 1975 to pursue advanced studies in dance at York, where she earned her BA and MFA, followed by a doctorate in dance education at Temple University, Philadelphia. She has been a full-time member of the faculty in York\u2019s Department of Dance since 1992.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"8\" width=\"200\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100514\/NFSA_kudelka.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"422\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Above: National Ballet School student Norma Sue Fisher-Stitt performing with\u00a0fellow student\u00a0James Kudelka. Photo courtesy of Norma Sue Fisher-Stitt.<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to drawing on her own experience and those whom she interviewed, Fisher-Stitt collected material for <em>The Ballet Class<\/em> from the National Archives in Ottawa, the archives of the National Ballet of Canada and the National Ballet School\u00a0and Dance Collection Danse. Her research and the publication were made possible with the support of the Social Science\u00a0&amp; Humanities Research Council of Canada and\u00a0the National Ballet School.<\/p>\n<p>The book was launched April 24 as part of the 50th-anniversary celebrations of the National Ballet School. The event was\u00a0attended by 400 of its alumni from across North America and overseas.
