{"id":31482,"date":"2010-06-28T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-06-28T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2010\/06\/28\/video-faculty-of-fine-arts-summer-institute-for-grad-students-focuses-on-performance-art-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T14:40:46","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T19:40:46","slug":"video-faculty-of-fine-arts-summer-institute-for-grad-students-focuses-on-performance-art-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2010\/06\/28\/video-faculty-of-fine-arts-summer-institute-for-grad-students-focuses-on-performance-art-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: Faculty of Fine Arts' Summer Institute for grad students focuses on Performance Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The two co-founding artistic directors of the hugely influential performance collective La Pocha Nostra\u00a0were artists-in-residence at York University\u2019s fourth annual Summer Institute in Theatre Studies, which ran\u00a0June 15 to 27.<\/p>\n<p>Guillermo G\u00f3mez-Pe\u00f1a, described as \u201camong the most significant of late-20th-century performance artists\" by New York City\u2019s <em>Village Voice<\/em>, and Roberto Sifuentes, professor of performance at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and former artistic director of New York\u2019s Trinity\/La MaMa <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100628\/\/lapocha1YFILe.jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"239\" height=\"350\" align=\"right\" \/>Performing Arts Program, led the intensive workshop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Right: Guillermo G\u00f3mez-Pe\u00f1a<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During their residency, they worked with\u00a0graduate students to develop an original performance which\u00a0was showcased on Saturday in the Accolade East Building at York\u2019s Keele campus. G\u00f3mez-Pe\u00f1a and Sifuentes\u00a0performed as part of the open public\u00a0exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1993, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pochanostra.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La Pocha Nostra<\/a> is an ever-morphing trans-disciplinary arts organization based in San Francisco, with branches in many other cities and countries. Positioning themselves as collaborators with \u201crebel artists\u201d around the world, members of La Pocha Nostra seek to erase the \u201cdangerous\u201d borders between art and politics, practice and theory, and art and spectator.<\/p>\n<p>A Spanglish neologism, \u201cpocha nostra\u201d is loosely translated to mean \u201cour impurities\u201d or the \u201ccartel of cultural bastards\u201d. The group describes its installation performances as living museums. The performers decorate themselves as \u201cethno-cyborgs\u201d that are\u00a0one-quarter stereotype, one-quarter audience projection, one-quarter esthetic artifact and one-quarter unpredictable personal or social monster. La Pocha Nostra audiences are invited to observe, interact and participate in a wide and wild variety of activities, from dressing and posing the performers like dolls to leashing them like animals or pointing weapons at them.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100628\/sifuentesflag2.jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"233\" height=\"350\" align=\"left\" \/>Left: Robert Sifuentes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Summer Institute brings prominent international theatre artists and scholars to campus each year to work with graduate students to give them an intensive experience of applied research and praxis,\u201d said Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/finearts\/faculty\/profs\/wylam.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lisa Wolford Wylam<\/a>, the director of York's master's and doctoral programs in theatre studies. \u201cGiven that our theatre studies MA\/PhD areas of specialization include post-colonial theatre and performance studies, bringing Pocha Nostra artists made perfect sense. And having had the opportunity to see G\u00f3mez-Pe\u00f1a and Sifuentes work with graduate students at the University of Wales in Aberystwyth some years ago, I knew it would be a fabulous experience for our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wolford Wylam has a long history with the company, including working as a dramaturge and assistant director on La Pocha Nostra shows in the late 1990s and editing the manuscript for G\u00f3mez-Pe\u00f1a's book <em>Dangerous Border Crossers<\/em>, to which she contributed an interview and an afterword. Wolford Wylam\u2019s Theatre Department colleague Professor Laura Levin is the editor of <em>Conversations Across the Border<\/em>, a collection of interviews with G\u00f3mez-Pe\u00f1a slated for publication by Seagull Press.<\/p>\n<p>Among the many remarkable La Pocha Nostra shows Wolford Wylam has participated in\u00a0and witnessed as an audience member, <em>The Mexterminator, <\/em>a piece presented in San Francisco to commemorate the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, stands out in her mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a large-scale production, for which they'd transformed an enormous warehouse into a post-apocalyptic environment inhabited by hybrid border creatures. The atmosphere was electric, like a rave, and audience members were completely uninhibited in the ways they interacted with the artists,\u201d she said. \u201cThere was even an \u2018ethnic makeover booth\u2019 where gallery visitors could transform themselves into a \u2018romantic Indian princess\u2019 or a \u2018militant Black Panther\u2019 complete with bad afro wig and blackface makeup. And people went for it. I couldn't believe it, but they went for it without shame <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100628\/WolfordWylamsml.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"131\" height=\"200\" align=\"left\" \/>or hesitation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Left: Lisa Wolford Wylam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Such extreme, experimental and interactive performances have brought the company an international following and made La Pocha Nostra a legendary name in the worlds of performance studies and conceptual art.<\/p>\n<p>The graduate students participating in the Summer Institute come from both the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies. Wolford Wylam gave seminars on Pocha Nostra's work to prepare them for the artists' arrival.<\/p>\n<p>While at York, G\u00f3mez-Pe\u00f1a and Sifuentes road-tested the final manuscript for their new book <em>Radical Performance Pedagogy: Exercises for Rebel Artists and Border Crossers<\/em> (forthcoming from Routledge Press in 2011).
