{"id":31571,"date":"2010-08-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-08-04T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2010\/08\/04\/video-yorks-dance-faculty-alumni-and-students-front-and-centre-at-global-assembly-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T14:41:44","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T19:41:44","slug":"video-yorks-dance-faculty-alumni-and-students-front-and-centre-at-global-assembly-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2010\/08\/04\/video-yorks-dance-faculty-alumni-and-students-front-and-centre-at-global-assembly-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: York's dance faculty, alumni and students front and centre at global assembly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several professors, alumni and students from York University's Department of Dance participated in the World Dance Alliance (WDA)\u00a02010 Global Dance Event\u00a0July 12 to 17 in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>More than\u00a0300 dance artists, scholars, educators and students, representing more than 25 countries, came together to explore the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wda-americas.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WDA<\/a> 's 2010 theme, \u201cIn Time Together: Viewing and Reviewing Contemporary Dance Practice\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The conference took place primarily at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dancetheaterworkshop.org\/\">Dance Theater Workshop (DTW)<\/a> and the Kimmel Center at New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education &amp; Human Development.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/finearts\/faculty\/profs\/warner.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mary Jane Warner<\/a>, chair of the Department of Dance and secretary of the WDA Americas division, moderated two sessions at the conference: Innovation\u00a0&amp; Exchange in Chinese Dance\u00a0and a session\u00a0titled\u00a0Diversified Bodies\u00a0&amp; Contemporary Pedagogy, which featured York alumnus\u00a0and contract\u00a0faculty member\u00a0Zihao Li (BEd &amp; MA \u201903) speaking on \u201cHow Today\u2019s Technology <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100804\/warner_001.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"146\" height=\"176\" align=\"left\" \/>Shapes our Way of Teaching Dance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Left: Mary Jane Warner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe alliance provides a venue for linking with colleagues with similar interests around the world,\u201d said Warner. \u201cParticipants learn about new research, share ideas and make connections with others in many parts of the world. The Department of Dance was well represented and our faculty and graduate students were excellent ambassadors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also part of the sessions, York doctoral candidate\u00a0in dance studies,\u00a0Evadne Kelly, presented her paper \u201cThe Affective Experience of Time During Performance\u201d as part of the Temporality\u00a0&amp; Contemporary Practices session.<\/p>\n<p>Performance plays a central role to the WDA's\u00a0global assemblies and the 2010 conference featured six concert programs in addition to its paper and panel presentations, master classes and workshops. York dance artists were front and centre throughout the program.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/finearts\/faculty\/profs\/cash.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Susan Cash<\/a> (BFA Spec. Hons. \u201978, MA \u201907) presented <em>Tree Woman<\/em>, a solo that premiered last season on campus (see <em>YFile,<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/archive\/index.asp?Article=14079\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jan. 21<\/a>), choreographed for and performed by her faculty colleague <a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontoartsfoundation.org\/First-Impressions-hidden-pages\/Keiko-Kitano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keiko Kitano<\/a>. Delving into the notion of innate roots and the instinctive pull of ancestral influence, the work blends the dancer's Japanese heritage and the choreographer\u2019s own Mohawk cultural inheritance and adopted Chinese traditions.<\/p>\n<p>Kitano also performed in a work she conceived, and that she co-choreographed and performed with Li, titled <em>Beyond<\/em>. The piece explores the moment of death and depicts the sorrowful human destiny en route to leaving this world.\u00a0Kitano and Li were accompanied by video projections by fine arts cultural studies Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/finearts\/faculty\/profs\/sinclair.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Don Sinclair<\/a> (BA Hons. \u201986, BA Spec. Hons. \u201990, MA \u201902) and student dancers they met while teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\u2019s\u00a02010 Summer Dance Institute and Intercontinental Festival the week prior to the WDA.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/finearts\/faculty\/profs\/mackwood.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">William Mackwood<\/a>, who also attended the WDA designed the lighting for Cash and Kitano <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100804\/small.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"150\" height=\"191\" align=\"right\" \/>as well as lighting for a piece by Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/finearts\/faculty\/profs\/small.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Holly Small<\/a> (BFA \u201977) that was shown as part of the final program.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Right: Holly Small<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Contract faculty member Sashar Zarif (MA \u201907) performed his self-choreographed solo <em>Dancing Freedom,<\/em> which also featured his own costume and sound designs<em>.<\/em> A quarry through the memories of revolution, war and displacement, Zarif's\u00a0work questions the notion of freedom through this creation. He asks: \u201cShould we achieve freedom internally before seeking it externally? Should you ask for an open palm with a fist?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, York University hosted the global assembly\u2019s North American debut to great acclaim in the Faculty of Fine Art\u2019s new Accolade performance facilities. In 2008, the assembly took place in Brisbane, Australia, and this year returned to North America for its first presentation in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The WDA is an international service organization that provides a forum for the exchange of ideas, and information expertise and resources in all areas of dance.
