{"id":31577,"date":"2010-08-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-08-10T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2010\/08\/10\/paul-delaney-on-canadian-aerospace-industrys-future-growth-in-age-of-privatized-space-travel-2\/"},"modified":"2010-08-10T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2010-08-10T08:00:00","slug":"paul-delaney-on-canadian-aerospace-industrys-future-growth-in-age-of-privatized-space-travel-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2010\/08\/10\/paul-delaney-on-canadian-aerospace-industrys-future-growth-in-age-of-privatized-space-travel-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Paul Delaney on Canadian aerospace industry's future growth in age of privatized space travel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A controversial decision by Barack Obama to privatize the exploration of space could be a blessing for Canada\u2019s aerospace industry, say experts in the field, who argue that this country\u2019s space agency and its associated industries are in a prime position to hitch their wagon to the US president\u2019s initiative on a ride toward the stars, Mars and potential riches, <a title=\"Calgary Herald story on space exploration\" href=\"http:\/\/www.calgaryherald.com\/technology\/privatization+space+exploration+could+giant+step+Canada\/3373593\/story.html\">wrote <em>The Calgary Herald <\/em>Aug. 8<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cObama\u2019s vision for the future of NASA\u2026is putting a lot of stock in the private sector,\u201d says Paul Delaney, a professor of physics &amp; astronomy in York University\u2019s Faculty of Science &amp; Engineering. \u201cThere have been a lot of groups that have been trying to position themselves to take advantage of what they see as a commercial opportunity in the coming decade. And I think they are right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Delaney says Obama\u2019s vision is clear on what the next generation of space exploration vehicle should do: study near-Earth asteroids \u2013 and their potential wealth of resources \u2013 and get ready to go to Mars.<\/p>\n<p>If industry can deliver on the \u201clow-Earth orbit\u201d side of space exploration, he says, such as the \u201ctaxi\u201d activity of restocking the International Space Station, NASA will be free to pursue larger goals \u201cof getting away from Earth entirely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Canada ultimately stands to profit, Delaney says, pointing to our track record in robotics and space technology, which will be needed as the groundwork is laid for future travel. \u201cThere\u2019s a good history here as far as developing space hardware, instrumentation,\u201d he says. \u201cI think you\u2019re going to see stepped-up activity from Canadian industry to contribute in a more significant way.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">York has considerable space research capacity through the <a title=\"CRESS Website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cress.yorku.ca\/oru\/\">Centre for Research in Earth and Space Science<\/a> (CRESS) and the <a title=\"Physics &amp; Astronomy @ York\" href=\"http:\/\/www.physics.yorku.ca\/index.html\">Department of Physics &amp; Astronomy<\/a>.
