{"id":31647,"date":"2010-09-23T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-09-23T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2010\/09\/23\/shermans-investment-made-yorks-state-of-the-art-research-centre-possible-2\/"},"modified":"2010-09-23T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2010-09-23T08:00:00","slug":"shermans-investment-made-yorks-state-of-the-art-research-centre-possible-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2010\/09\/23\/shermans-investment-made-yorks-state-of-the-art-research-centre-possible-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Shermans\u2019 investment made York's state-of-the-art Health Science Research Centre possible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The opening last week of a new state-of-the-art health research  centre was made possible by a $5-million investment by York University  Foundation board member Honey Sherman and her husband Dr. Barry Sherman, president and CEO of Apotex Inc., <a title=\"Jewish Tribune coverage of Sherman Centre opening\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishtribune.ca\/TribuneV2\/index.php\/201009213496\/Shermans-investment-makes-research-centre-possible.html\">wrote the <em>Jewish Tribune<\/em> Sept. 21<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The project brings scientists who study the brain and vision, virtual  reality and robots together under one roof \u2013 that of a former hockey  arena. The former York University Ice Arena, built in 1968 and known by  many as the Ice Palace, was transformed into a sophisticated centre for  interdisciplinary collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are extremely thankful to Honey and Barry Sherman for their generosity,\u201d said Mamdouh Shoukri,  York president &amp; vice-chancellor. \u201cThis unique new facility will  strengthen our University\u2019s research capacity and enhance collaboration  between researchers in the health, science and engineering fields.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The centre\u2019s highlight is a neuro-imaging laboratory with the latest  functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology, which is  critically important for research at York and future partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are particularly delighted we can support research in the health  sciences because this is an increasingly important area for research  innovation,\u201d Dr. Sherman said. \u201cThis facility and the work that will be  undertaken will help strengthen Ontario\u2019s global position in research  and innovation.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Summaries of the building's laboratories and research projects are available on the <a title=\"Sherman Health Science Research Centre at York University\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/excellence\/ShermanHealthScienceResearchCentre.htm\">Sherman Health Science Research Centre<\/a> page.
