{"id":31657,"date":"2010-09-28T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-09-28T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2010\/09\/28\/phd-student-and-cvr-professor-find-video-game-practice-readies-brain-for-challenging-tasks-2\/"},"modified":"2010-09-28T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2010-09-28T08:00:00","slug":"phd-student-and-cvr-professor-find-video-game-practice-readies-brain-for-challenging-tasks-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2010\/09\/28\/phd-student-and-cvr-professor-find-video-game-practice-readies-brain-for-challenging-tasks-2\/","title":{"rendered":"CVR professor and PhD student find video game practice readies brain for challenging tasks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You can read how researchers from the Centre for Vision Research at York University\u00a0used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine the effect of video-game experience on the neural control of increasingly complex visuomotor tasks in young men, in the October issue of <a title=\"Cortex\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cortexjournal.net\/home\"><em>Cortex<\/em><\/a>, an Elsevier journal, wrote <a title=\"CVR study coverage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/202586.php\">MediLexicon.com Sept. 27<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Lead author and PhD candidate Joshua Granek and colleagues concluded that the reorganization of the brain\u2019s cortical network, which\u00a0they discovered in the young men with significant video game-playing experience, gave them an advantage not only in playing video games but also in performing other complex visuomotor tasks.<\/p>\n<p>The authors wrote that other studies have suggested that individuals skilled in video game-playing have a more efficient brain network for controlling movement that includes the prefrontal, premotor, primary sensorimotor and parietal cortices.<\/p>\n<p>Senior investigator <a title=\"Lauren Sergio's laboratory &amp; research interests\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/lsergio\/\">Lauren Sergio<\/a>, a professor in York\u2019s <a title=\"Kinesiology @ York\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/kine\/\">School of Kinesiology and Health Science<\/a> in the <a title=\"Faculty of Health\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/\">Faculty of Health<\/a>, told the press that using high-resolution brain imaging, they were able to measure which brain areas were active at given times during the experiment.
