{"id":31705,"date":"2010-10-15T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-15T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2010\/10\/15\/sshrc-funded-international-workshop-examines-forced-marriages-in-conflict-stituations-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T14:43:05","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T19:43:05","slug":"sshrc-funded-international-workshop-examines-forced-marriages-in-conflict-stituations-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2010\/10\/15\/sshrc-funded-international-workshop-examines-forced-marriages-in-conflict-stituations-2\/","title":{"rendered":"SSHRC-funded international workshop examines forced marriages in conflict stituations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>York law &amp; society Professor <a title=\"Bunting profile at Osgoode\" href=\"http:\/\/www.osgoode.yorku.ca\/faculty\/Bunting_Annie.html\">Annie Bunting<\/a> (LLB '88) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/tubman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on the Global Migrations of African Peoples<\/a> are\u00a0hosting\u00a0an international workshop on forced marriage in conflict situations today and tomorrow in Room\u00a0305 York Lanes on the Keele <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20101015\/buntingA1.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"200\" height=\"235\" align=\"left\" \/>campus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Left: <\/strong>Annie Bunting<\/p>\n<p>Bringing together historians of slavery and women's human rights scholars, this\u00a0workshop will explore the phenomenon of forced marriage and\u00a0enslavement from\u00a0comparative and historical perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>During\u00a0conflicts in Sierra Leone, Liberia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda and Rwanda, women were kidnapped, raped and forced into \"marriages\" with combatants. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sc-sl.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Special Court for Sierra Leone<\/a> recently found such gender violations to constitute a new crime against humanity of forced marriage as opposed to sexual slavery.<\/p>\n<p>Workshop\u00a0speakers\u00a0will explore the merits of prosecuting those responsible for forced marriage under the heading of Sexual Slavery, Forced Marriage or Enslavement? They will also explore the historical antecedents of servile marriage and enslavement of women.<\/p>\n<p>A keynote presenter at the workshop is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/query.nytimes.com\/gst\/fullpage.html?res=9D0CE0D6123FF931A15752C0A9609C8B63&amp;sec=&amp;spon=&amp;pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rosaline M'Carthy<\/a>,\u00a0chair of the Women's Forum in Sierra Leone,\u00a0a\u00a0national umbrella organization of women's groups in the region. M'Carthy\u00a0has been working with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.womensrightscoalition.org\/site\/main_en.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coalition of Women's Human Rights in Conflict Situations<\/a> for the past three years and will speak about the experiences of\u00a0female victims in the Sierra Leone war.
