{"id":31828,"date":"2011-01-04T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-01-04T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2011\/01\/04\/york-researchers-shed-some-light-on-dark-matter-2-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T14:44:21","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T19:44:21","slug":"york-researchers-shed-some-light-on-dark-matter-2-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2011\/01\/04\/york-researchers-shed-some-light-on-dark-matter-2-2\/","title":{"rendered":"York researchers shed some light on dark matter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A York researcher and her graduate student are working to shed some light on one of the big questions in physics \u2013 what is dark matter and why can\u2019t we see it?<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a title=\"Veronica Sanz research profile\" href=\"http:\/\/www.physics.yorku.ca\/people\/sanz.html\">Veronica Sanz<\/a>, a particle physicist in the Faculty of Science &amp; Engineering, who joined the faculty this past summer, and graduate student Hiro Sato are co-authors with Andrea De Simone, PhD candidate at the Center for Theoretical Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in Cambridge, Mass. of a paper published in the American Physical Society\u2019s Physical Review Letters, one of the world's foremost scientific journals.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"8\" width=\"450\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20101217\/\/Sanz-Gonzalez_w_student.jpg\" alt=\"Veronica Sanz and Hiro Sato\" width=\"450\" height=\"277\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\"><strong>Above: Veronica Sanz, professor of particle physics in York's Faculty of Science &amp; Engineering, with graduate student Hiro Sato<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The article, \u201cPseudo-Dirac Dark Matter Leaves a Trace\u201d, suggests a method for detecting traces of a dark matter particle that are produced in a collider. Normally, dark matter can only be detected by inference \u2013 by \u201cnot seeing\u201d it in experiments designed to observe the missing energy that was carried away by the dark matter particle. The method described in the paper would allow experimentalists to see evidence of dark matter, thought to make up 23 per cent of the observable universe, for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody wants to get this piece of the cake, they want to explain this 23-per-cent part of the universe,\u201d says Sanz, who began her studies of dark matter during graduate studies at Harvard University and MIT, and continued them in her post-doctoral research at Boston University.<\/p>\n<p>Dark matter was first postulated by Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky in 1934 to help explain anomalies in the orbital velocities of galaxies in clusters.<\/p>\n<p>What led Sanz to the idea that she and her co-authors have described was a growing lack of confidence in WIMPS.<\/p>\n<p>No, not weaklings on the beach \u2013 these WIMPS are the hypothetical \u201cweakly interacting massive particles\u201d that represent one theory about dark matter. In a technique used by the cryogenic dark matter search (CDMS) detector at Minnesota\u2019s Soudan Underground Laboratory, scientists thought they would be able to detect dark matter, but found nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is very worrisome,\u201d says Sanz, \u201cbecause our WIMP idea of dark matter doesn\u2019t explain why CDMS didn\u2019t see anything. So, we sat down and tried to think of another way of leading to dark matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Experimentalists will now test the York team\u2019s theory in a collider by smashing protons and watching for the observable remnants. \u201cWe are asking them to look at particles displaced from the collision point. This is not what they were going to do, they were going to look for [evidence of ] nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These questions are the subject of a larger debate about the fundamental concept of gravity and the make-up of the universe, says Sato, a master\u2019s student who came to York from the University of Toronto so he could work on dark matter with Sanz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople thought maybe something\u2019s wrong with gravity theory \u2013 that there\u2019s some fundamental problem with how Einstein or Newton thought about what gravity was. The other way of thinking about it is, no, there is matter, it\u2019s just invisible.
