He will argue that the problem must be confronted not just by political parties and parliaments but by universities. Universities are not just institutions of teaching and books, not just institutions of the economy, but institutions of democracy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110117\/\/fallisBook(1).jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"160\" height=\"243\" align=\"right\" \/><strong>Left: George Fallis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fallis delivers his lecture, \u201cDemocratic Deficit: Universities and the Future of Democracy\u201d, in Founders Assembly Hall, 152 Founders College, at 7:30pm.<\/p>\n<p>In his essay \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.academicmatters.ca\/current_issue.article.gk?catalog_item_id=1233&amp;category=\/issues\/OCT2008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professors as Public Intellectuals<\/a>\u201d published two years ago in <em>Academic Matters<\/em>, Fallis made a similar argument\u00a0that a university\u2019s responsibility to contribute to democratic life is just as critical as its role in economic development.<\/p>\n<p>Fallis is professor of economics and social science who has published widely on housing, urban policy and constitutional reform. His current research focuses on universities: their roles and responsibilities in the 21st century; the value of undergraduate liberal education; and the role of university-based research in national innovation. His most recent book is <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.utppublishing.com\/Multiversities-Ideas-and-Democracy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Multiversities, Ideas, and Democracy<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110117\/\/vico.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"7\" vspace=\"7\" width=\"175\" height=\"250\" align=\"right\" \/>At York, the Princeton-educated Fallis has served as chair of economics, dean of the former Faculty of Arts and chair of the Senate Academic Policy &amp; Planning Committee. He has been academic colleague on the Council of Ontario Universities and an auditor of degree programs at Ontario universities.<\/p>\n<p>The annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/laps\/vico\/index.html\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Giambattista Vico Lecture<\/a> was named after an 18th-century Italian philosopher of history, culture and myth whose ideas had a profound influence on the humanities and social sciences.
