Her films allow viewers to click in and around apartment towers in Toronto and around the world to hear the stories of residents. In the wake of the United Way report, EYE WEEKLY checked in with Cizek  to get her thoughts on the state of our concrete vertical suburbs, and  the need to rejuvenate them.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Q: <em>What are the \u201cHighrise\u201d films, in a nutshell?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>A: The original idea was to do something in Toronto, as a city. Not City  Hall, but Toronto; to see how documentary can be part of city building.  I\u2019m not someone who studies the city\u2014I\u2019m not an urban planner, I\u2019m not  an architect\u2014and I had certain assumptions about the city. The city I  live in\u2014Toronto\u2014but also the urban experience in general. I think we  are, or at least I was, at fault in thinking of the city as something  that kind of happens to you, rather than as something we create and we  constantly reinvent.<\/p>\n<p>I got really inspired by this phenomenal  world-class research that\u2019s happening in our city\u2014from David Hulchanski,  ERA Architects and York University\u2019s <a title=\"Overview of the Global Suburbanisms project\" href=\"http:\/\/research.news.yorku.ca\/2010\/05\/18\/researcher-and-city-institute-director-shifts-the-lens-to-suburbs-around-the-globe\/\">Global Suburbanism team<\/a>\u2014not only  to engage in the city I live in but to start rethinking how we  understand the city all over the world. What \u201curban\u201d entails is not what  we typically think: it\u2019s actually at the edges, at the periphery, in  the suburbs where some of the most complex, diverse, interesting and  highly problematic things are happening. We need to understand these  things in order to be able to do something about them. \u201cHighrise\u201d is,  quite simply, a multi-year, multimedia documentary exploring the human  experience in \u201cvertical suburbs\u201d around the world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Global Suburbanisms project is led by Professor <a title=\"Roger Keil research profile\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/fes\/faculty\/fulltime\/profiles\/KeilRoger.htm\">Roger Keil<\/a> in the Faculty of Environmental Studies, director of the <a title=\"City Institute\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/city\/Home\/\">City Institute<\/a>, and funded by the <a title=\"SSHRC website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca\/\">Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada<\/a> (SSHRC).
