{"id":32015,"date":"2011-03-23T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-03-23T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2011\/03\/23\/professor-mary-wiktorowicz-cordinating-mental-healthcare-in-nova-scotia-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T14:46:17","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T19:46:17","slug":"professor-mary-wiktorowicz-cordinating-mental-healthcare-in-nova-scotia-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2011\/03\/23\/professor-mary-wiktorowicz-cordinating-mental-healthcare-in-nova-scotia-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Mary Wiktorowicz: Cordinating mental healthcare in Nova Scotia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Research by York Faculty of Health Professor <a title=\"Mary Wiktorowicz research profile\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/people\/index.php?dept=&amp;mid=162283\">Mary Wiktorowicz<\/a> on how government policy can foster a more coordinated mental health-care system was front and centre\u00a0March 18\u00a0at a <a title=\"CIHR Website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca\/e\/193.html\">Canadian Institutes of Health Research<\/a> (CIHR) Best Brains Exchange.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110323\/bestbrain.jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"233\" height=\"350\" align=\"right\" \/>The event, which\u00a0took place in Halifax, NS,\u00a0is part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca\/e\/193.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CIHR<\/a>\u2019s ongoing effort to bring together the best brains of research and decision-making on a government identified, high priority issue.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Right: <\/strong>Faculty of Health Professor Mary Wiktorowicz<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Friday\u2019s Best Brains Exchange, titled \u201cGovernance Models to Support an Integrated System of Care for Mental Health and Addictions Services\u201d, was developed by CIHR in cooperation with the Nova Scotia government.<\/p>\n<p>Wiktorowicz was approached to be on the panel of experts to the advisory committee on mental health for Nova Scotia\u2019s Department of Health because of her research comparing\u00a0the modes of governance used in 10 mental health networks in rural versus urban and regionalized versus non-regional contexts, published in the October to December 2010 issue of the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ijic.org\/index.php\/ijic\/issue\/view\/46\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Journal of Integrated Care<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Wiktorowicz\u2019s research found that collaboration is a key factor for effective and safe care, especially since organizations across different jurisdictions make up the health-care system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMental health care goes beyond treatment \u2013 it involves a range of supports that help individuals recover and manage their lives, such as housing and income assistance that are run by different organizations in separate jurisdictions,\" said Wiktorowicz.<\/p>\n<p>\"If collaboration between these organizations is not built into the system, the continuity of care is easily broken. Without the appropriate supports, an individual may eventually experience a mental health crisis\u00a0and patient safety can become a real risk,\" she added.<\/p>\n<p>The advisory committee on mental health\u00a0was struck following the release of the Hyde Report, which used findings from an investigation into the death of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/story\/2010\/12\/08\/ns-hyde-inquiry-final-report.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Howard Hyde<\/a>, a client in Nova Scotia's mental health system. Hyde died in November 2007, in a jail cell following a series of altercations with police and prison guards.\u00a0Law enforcement officials had tried and failed to find him access to emergency psychiatric care.<\/p>\n<p>Knowledge exchanged at the Best Brains\u00a0panel\u00a0will provide the Nova Scotia Mental Health Strategy Advisory Committee <span>with an overview of the latest evidence, as well as timely\u00a0advice from experts in the field of mental health and governance in health care. The panel was comprised of\u00a0researchers, administrators, clinicians and\u00a0policy-makers. Participation was based on\u00a0each individual's\u00a0expertise and knowledge on critical issues related to access to mental health and addictions services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\"Research shows that even in decentralized systems, policy and organizational\u00a0processes can foster more collaboration and lead to better care,\" said Wiktorowicz. \"For example, appointing a director of mental health for a region whose mandate is to bring together representatives from diverse organizations can lead to information sharing and\u00a0innovations supported by inter-organizational coordination within the system.\"<\/p>\n<p>The Best Brains Exchange is part of a CIHR provincial engagement strategy, called Evidence on Tap, to make high-quality evidence that addresses health system priorities accessible to decision makers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More about Mary Wiktorowicz<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wiktorowicz\u00a0adopts a comparative lens to study models of health system governance, focusing on mental health policy and pharmaceutical policy.\u00a0Her comparative policy research also analyses international\u00a0 pharmaceutical regulatory policy and develops frameworks to enhance our understanding of them.
