{"id":32061,"date":"2011-04-11T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-04-11T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2011\/04\/11\/psychology-students-show-off-fourth-year-research-projects-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T14:46:43","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T19:46:43","slug":"psychology-students-show-off-fourth-year-research-projects-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2011\/04\/11\/psychology-students-show-off-fourth-year-research-projects-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Psychology students show off fourth-year research projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Students Angela Deotto and Lilly Solomon recognized for poster projects<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you were wandering through Vari Hall last Wednesday afternoon, you could have stopped and chatted with\u00a0fourth-year psychology students about\u00a0some pretty esoteric\u00a0subjects.<\/p>\n<p>The rotunda was a maze of posters featuring\u00a0the thesis projects of 78 students ready to explain whether\u00a0eating disturbances are\u00a0symptoms of depression, how to measure prejudice, the relationship between exercise and forgiveness, how\u00a0sound affects perception of space. Their research projects, supervised by\u00a0faculty members,\u00a0spanned all areas of\u00a0psychology\u00a0\u2013 cognitive, social, developmental, quantitative, history and theory, neuroscience, and clinical.<\/p>\n<p>The end-of-year event has become so big that the Department of Psychology moved it to Vari Hall last year from the crowded halls of the Behavioural Science Building.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110411\/\/psychFair.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" align=\"baseline\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The poster projects are worth five per cent of students\u2019 final mark and judged by roving graduate students based on clarity, design and the students\u2019 ability to explain their research in a comprehensive manner.\u00a0Many will go on to present their research at a variety of national and international conferences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you are speaking to your supervisor,\u00a0other professors or\u00a0fellow students, it is important to know how to present and communicate your results to different audiences,\u201d says psychology Professor Susan Murtha, who has organized the event for the past three years.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"1\" width=\"300\" align=\"left\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110411\/\/deotto2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"299\" height=\"177\" align=\"left\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110411\/\/solomon1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" align=\"left\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>And the students who go on to graduate studies will have to defend their research to external examiners who don\u2019t know much about their field. \u201cIt is really important to be able to understand how to communicate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Left: <\/strong>Poster winners Angela Deotto (top) and Lilly Solomon. <em>Photos by Brett Thompson<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By 4pm, judges had selected two who did it best: Angela Deotto (supervised by <a title=\"Christine Till research profile York University\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/ctill\/\">Christine Till<\/a>) for her poster \"Mathematical impairment in pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis: Relationship with white matter integrity\"; and Lilly Solomon (supervised by <a title=\"Jennifer Steeves research profile York University\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/steeves\/Lab\/Home.html\">Jennifer Steeves<\/a>) for her poster \"MS to the \u2018occipital face area\u2019 affects face recognition but not categorization\".
