Professor Raymond Mar says get them reading novels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you follow the advice below, chances are, your son will turn into the kind of man you want him to be, wrote <a title=\"Women's Day advice on raising a well-adjusted son\" href=\"http:\/\/www.womansday.com\/Articles\/Sex-Relationships\/Family\/How-to-Raise-a-Good-Man.html\">WomensDay.com May 11<\/a>, in a story about parenting advice for mothers:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Encourage him to read novels. <a title=\"Raymond Mar's research on the relationship between novels and empathy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/archive\/index.asp?Article=10943\">Ongoing studies<\/a> at York University [by psychology Professor <a title=\"Raymond Mar research profile York University\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/people\/index.php?dept=P&amp;mid=645748\">Raymond Mar<\/a> and colleagues in the Faculty of Health] show that people who read more fiction than nonfiction score higher on empathy tests.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>Researchers theorize that the parts of the brain we use to understand how fictional characters feel are the same ones we use to figure out how real people feel.
