What if you\u2019re drafting government policy on air quality control and need expertise in how the latest atmospheric chemistry and physics findings translate into plans and policy?<\/p>\n<p>Graduate students and post-doctoral fellows at York University have new options to pursue the research and applied dimensions of these and other questions, thanks to $3.3 million in funding from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/index_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada<\/a> (NSERC).<\/p>\n<p>httpv:\/\/youtu.be\/OtRWua59EPU<\/p>\n<p>The funding, provided through NSERC\u2019s <span>$29.6\u00a0million investment over six years in the Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) Grants program, will support two new training programs in the Faculty of Science &amp; Engineering, each valued at $1.65 million over the period. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3538\" style=\"width: 233px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/research.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2011\/06\/Hugh_Wilson_NSERC_april2611.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3538\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3538\" src=\"http:\/\/research.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2011\/06\/Hugh_Wilson_NSERC_april2611-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Hugh Wilson\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Hugh Wilson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Students and fellows enrolled in each program will gain experience in basic and applied research, along with the practical and professional skills needed to successfully transition to research careers in the academic, industry or government sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/gradbiol\/faculty\/profiles\/hughr.html\">Hugh Wilson<\/a> <strong> <\/strong>in the Faculty of Science &amp; Engineering\u2019s Department of Biology will lead the <strong>Vision Science and Applications program<\/strong>. Based in the internationally-recognized <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cvr.yorku.ca\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centre for Vision Research<\/a> (CVR), the program focuses on <span>vision-based information technologies that require optimal information displays to ensure accurate human interpretation of data are playing an increasingly important role in many economic sectors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Key applications include: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3D digital media (e.g., 3D film, geographical databases, autocad systems)<\/li>\n<li>Aerospace (e.g., cockpit technologies, search-and-rescue)<\/li>\n<li>Face and scene analysis technologies (e.g., facial biometrics)<\/li>\n<li>Visual health and assessment technologies (e.g., functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), perimetry)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Vision Science and Applications team includes 25 researchers at seven international universities and 10 partner organizations, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imax.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IMAX<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/default.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canadian Space Agency<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autodeskresearch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Autodesk Research<\/a>. At York, a total of 10 professors affiliated with CVR will lend their expertise to the project. The program will enrol four students in its first year and 16 students in each successive year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3539\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/research.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2011\/06\/Rudolph_NSERC_april2611.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3539\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3539 \" style=\"margin: 0.1px\" src=\"http:\/\/research.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2011\/06\/Rudolph_NSERC_april2611-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Jochen Rudolph\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3539\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Jochen Rudolph<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Professors <a href=\"http:\/\/science.yorku.ca\/rudolphjyorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jochen Rudolph<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/science.yorku.ca\/rmclarenyorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert McLaren<\/a> in the Faculty of Science &amp; Engineering\u2019s Department of Chemistry will lead the <strong>Training Program for Integrating Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics from Earth to Space (IACPES) program<\/strong><span>. Jointly based in York\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cac.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centre for Atmospheric Chemistry<\/a> (CAC) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/cress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centre for Research in Earth &amp; Space Science<\/a> (CRESS), the program\u2019s interdisciplinary focus will give students an integrated understanding of atmospheric chemistry and physics from earth into space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Key applications include: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>measuring and modelling atmospheric change<\/li>\n<li>examining air quality and health issues<\/li>\n<li>monitoring changes in the arctic atmosphere<\/li>\n<li>detecting sources of greenhouse gases<\/li>\n<li>measuring Earth\u2019s changing atmosphere from space<\/li>\n<li>exploring and understanding other planets\u2019 atmospheres<\/li>\n<li>developing the policy implications of atmospheric science<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The IACPES team includes <span>11 applicants at six universities and 23 collaborators at 10 partner organizations, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ec.gc.ca\/default.asp?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Environment Canada<\/a>, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a> (NOAA) in Boulder, Colo., several industries and two premier research institutes in Germany.\u00a0The program will create 21 places for undergraduate students, master\u2019s students, PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in its first year, with over 200 places created over the successive five years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>httpv:\/\/youtu.be\/6YlFv0Xd9no<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3541\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/research.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2011\/06\/Maclaren_NSERC_april2611.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3541\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3541\" src=\"http:\/\/research.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2011\/06\/Maclaren_NSERC_april2611-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Robert McLaren\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3541\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Robert McLaren<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBy securing two of only 18 projects awarded to universities across Canada, York builds on its strong track record in leading large-scale, interdisciplinary collaborative research projects,\u201d said Stan Shapson, vice-president research &amp; innovation. \u201c<span>The programs will provide our innovative research centres \u2013 CVR, CRESS and CAC\u00a0\u2013 with a competitive advantage in attracting excellent graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who wish to pursue careers in the applications of vision science or atmospheric chemistry and physics.
