{"id":32205,"date":"2011-07-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-04T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2011\/07\/04\/york-researchers-lend-expertise-to-ontario-health-study-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T14:48:14","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T19:48:14","slug":"york-researchers-lend-expertise-to-ontario-health-study-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2011\/07\/04\/york-researchers-lend-expertise-to-ontario-health-study-2\/","title":{"rendered":"York researchers lend expertise to Ontario Health Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110704\/450px-Blood_pressure_measurement.jpg\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\" align=\"left\" \/>Five researchers from York University's\u00a0Faculty of Health are lending\u00a0their expertise to the\u00a0Ontario Health Study as it rolls out\u00a0an online survey and a series of mini clinics on the Keele campus and in the York-TD Community Engagement Centre in the Yorkgate Mall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Right: As part of their involvement with the Ontario Health Study, researchers will take physical measures such as blood pressure during a series of mini clinics that will be held this fall <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the most ambitious community-based medical surveys ever conducted, the\u00a0study will track the\u00a0health of Ontario residents over the course of their lifetimes.\u00a0A community health project, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ontariohealthstudy.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ontario Health Study<\/a> is aimed at establishing\u00a0the largest population-based\u00a0longitudinal cohort study ever attempted in North America, and will be the first major epidemiological survey\u00a0to be conducted online.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The study will focus on identifying gene-environmental\u00a0determinants of different chronic diseases, including cancer, asthma, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's, mental health disorders and more.<\/p>\n<p>As part of York University\u2019s involvement, researchers from the School of Kinesiology &amp; Health Science and the psychology program will be holding mini clinics this fall to collect physical measures from volunteers from York University and its neighbouring communities. The mini-clinics will also provide a venue for the distribution of health information and health promotion materials. The York researchers involved in the study are: \u00a0<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Professor <strong><span>Chris Ardern<\/span><\/strong> (Kinesiology &amp; Health Science),\u00a0whose research is\u00a0focused on the epidemiology of physical activity, obesity and cardio metabolic risk.\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Professor <strong><span>Sherry Grace<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(Kinesiology &amp; Health Science), a researcher\u00a0specializing in cardiac psychology and the utilization of health services.<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Professor <strong><span>Jennifer Kuk<\/span><\/strong> (Kinesiology &amp; Health Science), whose research looks at\u00a0obesity and related health risks (cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes) and\u00a0the influence of physical activity using both exercise interventions and epidemiological approaches. |<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Professor <strong><span>Jane Irvine<\/span><\/strong> (Psychology), a researcher whose work focuses on stress and cardiovascular disease, and modifying cardiovascular behaviour and psychosocial risk factors.<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Professor <strong><span>Paul Ritvo<\/span><\/strong> (Kinesiology &amp; Health Science), head of the Ritvo Lab and a researcher specializing in health behaviour change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The questionnaire, which is completely voluntary, takes about 30 minutes to complete and will ask participants about\u00a0their general health, genetic history and lifestyle.\u00a0The study\u00a0will then follow participants over their lifespan to\u00a0determine how a variety of factors influence participants' health over a long period of time. The data\u00a0collected will in turn help\u00a0researchers\u00a0develop strategies for the prevention and treatment of diseases, as well as to inform health-policy changes.<\/p>\n<p>Irvine\u00a0chairs the\u00a0social health component of the\u00a0survey and will work with Ritvo and Grace. Ardern and Kuk\u00a0are leading the obesity and physical activity component of the survey.\u00a0As part of their involvement with the study, the\u00a0researchers will have access to\u00a0the data\u00a0collected.<\/p>\n<p>More information on the clinics will be forthcoming.
