{"id":32319,"date":"2011-09-28T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-09-28T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2011\/09\/28\/homelessness-symposium-examines-what-works-what-doesnt-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T14:49:29","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T19:49:29","slug":"homelessness-symposium-examines-what-works-what-doesnt-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2011\/09\/28\/homelessness-symposium-examines-what-works-what-doesnt-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Homelessness symposium examines what works, what doesn't"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>York will\u00a0host Without a Home, a research symposium on contemporary issues in Canadian homelessness, that\u00a0will bring together top academics next week\u00a0to discuss some of the latest findings.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium will take place Thursday, Oct. 6, from 8:30am to 12:30pm, at 280N York Lanes, Keele campus, followed by lunch from 12:30 to 2pm.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110928\/\/cherylForchuk.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"197\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>The presenters will also discuss the \u201cso-whatness\u201d or policy implications of their research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cService Preferences of Homeless Youth: Housing First, Treatment First or Both Together?\u201d will be discussed by <a href=\"http:\/\/publish.uwo.ca\/~cforchuk\/oldindex.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cheryl Forchuk<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0(right)<\/strong>, acting associate director of nursing research at the University of Western Ontario. Housing-first initiatives focus on interventions designed to move individuals to appropriate and available housing, and ongoing housing supports. It has been found to produce good outcomes for homeless adults with mental illness but has not been specifically tested\u00a0for youth. With the treatment-first initiative, the individual is not housed until psychiatrically stable.<\/p>\n<p>Forchuk will look at a current study\u00a0that examined three approaches to service for homeless youth \u2013 housing first, treatment first for mental health and addictions, and <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110928\/JinoDistasio.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"105\" height=\"152\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>simultaneous attention to both housing and treatment. Youth were given the opportunity to choose which service method they preferred.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ius.uwinnipeg.ca\/about_ius_profiles.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jino Distasio<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0(left)<\/strong>, director of the Institute of Urban Studies at the University of Winnipeg, will discuss \u201cHomelessness and Mental Health: Winnipeg\u2019s Approach to Building Capacity and Housing Those in Need\u201d. Distasio\u2019s presentation will provide an overview of a massive five-city study by the Mental Health Commission of Canada,\u00a0that examined the effectiveness of a housing-first intervention in the Canadian context. Distasio will focus on the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110928\/StephenHwang(1).jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"142\" height=\"206\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>unique aspects of the Winnipeg approach, which has been built on the strengths of the local Aboriginal community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phs.utoronto.ca\/faculty_template_new.asp?GetFile=sHwang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Stephen Hwang<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0(right)<\/strong>, of St. Michael\u2019s Hospital and a professor at the University of Toronto, will talk about \u201cHealth Care Utilization Among People Who Are Homeless\u201d. He will discuss research that measured health care utilization rates among homeless adults in a large Canadian urban centre and compared observed utilization rates to matched controls from the general population<strong>.<\/strong> Most of the research on this topic has been conducted in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110928\/TimAubry.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"146\" height=\"196\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>University of Ottawa psychology Professor<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.uottawa.ca\/psy\/eng\/profdetails.asp?ID=137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span><strong>Tim Aubry<\/strong><\/span><\/a><strong> (left)<\/strong> will discuss \u201cLesson Learned from the Implementation of Housing First in a Small Canadian City\u201d. His talk\u00a0will focus on the Mental Health Commission of Canada\u2019s housing-first study<strong> <\/strong>and the results of the housing-first approach in Moncton, NB.<\/p>\n<p>A key feature of the Canadian response to homelessness is the use of law enforcement to manage its visibility. <a href=\"http:\/\/homelesshub.ca\/User\/Public.aspx?userId=a38de82d-fc0b-4fde-99f4-b47aed109e46&amp;tab=research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephen Gaetz<\/a>'s research presentation, \u201c<span>Can I See Your ID? Policing and the Criminalization of Youth Homelessness in Toronto\u201d,<\/span> will focus on the interactions that Toronto street youth have with members of the Toronto Police Service. Gaetz, a professor in\u00a0York\u2019s Faculty of Education and associate dean of research &amp; field development for the homeless hub, will discuss his research <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20110928\/StephenGaetz.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"212\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homelesshub.ca\/User\/Public.aspx?userId=a8b5f6ad-f7de-47b9-83b8-233aefb97a62&amp;tab=research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>Bill O'Grady<\/span><\/a><em> <\/em>of the University of Guelph<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Right: Stephen Gaetz<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Their research has found that youth who use drop-ins and emergency housing services regularly have encounters with the police. For youth who are severely marginalized, many of these encounters take place because of their public drinking and illegal substance use. But for other homeless youth not involved in crime or illegal drug use, they, too, are under close police surveillance and contact. The presentation will conclude with a discussion on the implications of social profiling and the criminalizing of youth homelessness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The symposium is presented by the <a href=\"http:\/\/homelessresearch.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Canadian Homelessness Research Network<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homelesshub.ca\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the homeless hub<\/a>.
