{"id":32411,"date":"2011-11-02T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-11-02T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2011\/11\/02\/professor-patricia-keeney-launches-two-new-collections-of-poems-and-conversations-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T14:50:36","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T19:50:36","slug":"professor-patricia-keeney-launches-two-new-collections-of-poems-and-conversations-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2011\/11\/02\/professor-patricia-keeney-launches-two-new-collections-of-poems-and-conversations-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Patricia Keeney launches two new collections of poems and conversations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Emotionally raw and deeply human, womanhood and marginalization, these are just a few of the words that describe the\u00a0two newest books of poems and conversations <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20111027\/\/PatriciaKeeneyBookFirstWoman.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"282\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>coming from York English and creative writing\u00a0Professor Patricia Keeney.<\/p>\n<p>There are three launches scheduled for Keeney's new books,\u00a0<em>First Woman<\/em> (Inanna Publications) and <em>You Bring Me Wings<\/em><span> (ANTARES Publishing House of Spanish Culture). The first is <\/span>Tuesday, Nov. 8 at The Art Bar at 8pm, second floor of the Paupers Pub, 539 Bloor St. W. in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>The second will\u00a0be at York on\u00a0Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 3 to 4:30pm, as part of the Canadian Studies Speaker Series, in the Senior Common Room, 010 Vanier College, Keele campus, where she\u2019ll also read and discuss her creative work and research. The third launch by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/inanna\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Inanna Publications<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<em>First Woman<\/em> will\u00a0take place Thursday, Nov. 24, from 6 to 8pm, at the\u00a0College Street United Church, 452 College St. in Toronto.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Keeney draws her greatest inspiration from the intersection of cultures, whether between members of one family, intimate friends\u00a0or peoples around the world. She is a constant traveller.\u00a0This academic year alone, she was involved in <span><strong><span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20111027\/PatriciaKeeneyNew2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"215\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/><\/span><\/strong><\/span>conferences and arts festivals from Russia to Slovenia to Iran. As Keeney puts it, \"I'm a wanderer...more of a cultural explorer than a tourist.\" And it is those wanderings that seep deep into\u00a0the\u00a0layers\u00a0of her work, emerging as poems that often express a different way of seeing the world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Left: Patricia Keeney<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>For <em>You Bring Me Wings<\/em>, Keeney travelled to Mexico City for a summer of imaginative conversation with Mexican poet Ethel Krauze that spilled onto the pages of their new book.\u00a0This bilingual (English and Spanish) collection\u00a0is infused with what <a href=\"http:\/\/wapitiwords.ca\/about_patricia_keeney.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keeney<\/a>\u00a0identifies as \"poems and conversations around love, the creative process, the conditions of womanhood and the marginalization of two distinct cultures co-existing along the American border.\u201d The conversations explore approaches to writing poetry and living life fully. As\u00a0writer Eva Tihanyi puts it in\u00a0her introduction: \u201cFinally a book that presents talking and poetry as a partnership, that dares to embrace its own <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20111102\/patriciakeeney_you_bring_me_wings2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"330\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>subjectivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keeney was one of the first Canadian writers to be given a grant under the North American Free Trade Agreement to open up areas of cultural exchange with Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><span>Keeney's\u00a0poems have been hailed as lyric and political, ranging from sexual love to individual relations, to confrontations with power and profound meditations on life and culture. In her <em>First Woman <\/em>collection of poems, she\u00a0examines, at a \"deeply personal level, the richly ambivalent experience of living in South Africa, for instance, and it explores the\u00a0dynamics of family. So, the interior life is both personal and political, local and global.\u00a0For me, there is no discrepancy in this,\" says the author of nine books of poetry and a\u00a0novel.\u00a0\"The way we see things and the weight we give them determines their importance in our sense of who we are.\"\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Keeney continued her investigation of cultural borders in Iran recently where it is mandatory for women, including foreign visitors, to wear a hijab. \"The ambivalence I felt about this was echoed in some extraordinary conversations with women in academia and the arts around various kinds of repression in a society that is deeply divided. I am writing about it already,\" she says.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20111102\/\/PatKeeneyIran.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Left: Patricia Keeney sharing a traditional meal in Iran with her husband, York theatre Professor Don Rubin, and a friend (left)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Her\u00a0poetry has been translated into French, Spanish, Bulgarian, Chinese and Hindi. As a book and theatre reviewer, and an arts journalist for over 20 years, Keeney has written extensively in various Canadian and international publications, including <em>The Canadian Forum<\/em>,<em> Maclean's magazine<\/em>, <em>Canadian Literature<\/em>,<em> Canadian Woman Studies<\/em>,<em> Arc Poetry Magazine<\/em>,<em> New Theatre Quarterly<\/em>, based in London, England, <em>South African Theatre Journal<\/em> and <em>Critical Stages<\/em><em>,<\/em> a web journal.<\/p>\n<p>Some of Keeney\u2019s previous work includes her first collection of poetry <em>Swimming Alone<\/em> (Oberon Press, 1988); a post-feminist novel,\u00a0<em>The Incredible Shrinking Wife<\/em> (Black Moss Press, 1995); and <em>Selected Poems of Patricia Keeney<\/em> (Oberon Press, 2002).
