The\u00a0second event on Tuesday, Nov. 29, features a community dialogue on\u00a0pressing social issues facing the region. Members of the York community are invited to both events.<\/p>\n<p>Since September, a knowledge broker placed at the United Way\u00a0York Region has been working in close partnership with the University's Knowledge Mobilization\u00a0Unit to enhance opportunities for collaboration in research with respect to social determinants of health. The partnership is the result of a\u00a0successful application to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research submitted in February 2011.\u00a0(Knowledge brokers are project staff acting as intermediaries that connect researchers to potential research users.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20111108\/\/M_johnny_hs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"179\" height=\"250\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>\u201cThis is a tremendous opportunity to maximize the impact of York research and build on a significant partnership for York in knowledge mobilization,\u201d said <strong>Michael Johnny (right)<\/strong>, manager of York\u2019s Knowledge Mobilization Unit.<\/p>\n<p>The Nov. 9\u00a0forum, <a href=\"http:\/\/yrfn.ca\/\">Food for Change: Building a Food Charter for\u00a0York Region<\/a>, hosted by the United Way\u00a0York Region\u00a0in collaboration with various partners, will bring together representatives from a number of community organizations to discuss\u00a0food security and agriculture issues. Participants will also embark on a\u00a0discussion about establishing a Food Charter for York Region.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A food charter is a statement of values and principles to guide a community\u2019s food policy, and is a key document for communities working towards developing a\u00a0food system that is healthy, equitable and sustainable.\u00a0The organizers of Food\u00a0for Change are\u00a0hoping that\u00a0academic partners\u00a0from York University will attend the event and engage in a dialogue to\u00a0explore ways that research can inform and support this initiative in both the short and longer term.<\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 29, the United Way York Region\u00a0will host\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.york.unitedway.ca\/the-community-fund\/meeting-house\/\">East Gwillimbury Meeting House<\/a>,\u00a0part of a series of community dialogues on pressing social issues in York Region.\u00a0During the meeting house, participants will\u00a0explore the implications\u00a0for social infrastructure development in communities that\u00a0are facing\u00a0major population growth.\u00a0Over the next few months, meeting house dialogues will also be held in Newmarket, Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking within Canada\u2019s leading knowledge mobilization university, York\u2019s Knowledge Mobilization Unit continues to work together with our partners to make York\u2019s research and talent accessible and relevant to the community,\u201d said Robert Hach\u00e9, vice-president research &amp; innovation. \u201cThis partnership will help facilitate initiatives to improve the quality of life for residents in York Region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information on knowledge mobilization services at York, or about this partnership,\u00a0e-mail York's Knowledge Mobilization Unit\u00a0at\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:kmbunit@yorku.ca\">kmbunit@yorku.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Republished <\/em><em>courtesy of<\/em><em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\">YFile<\/a><em>\u2013 York University\u2019s daily e-bulletin.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two upcoming events hosted by the United Way York Region\u00a0have\u00a0a special connection to York University's Knowledge Mobilization Unit.\u00a0 The first is a community forum\u00a0tomorrow, Nov. 9 to discuss food policy and the development of a\u00a0food charter for York Region.
