{"id":32461,"date":"2009-11-25T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-11-25T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2009\/11\/25\/new-centre-looks-at-biomedical-interactions-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T14:51:16","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T19:51:16","slug":"new-centre-looks-at-biomedical-interactions-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2009\/11\/25\/new-centre-looks-at-biomedical-interactions-2\/","title":{"rendered":"New centre looks at biomedical interactions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[%ArtFullText%]--><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Scientists at the new Centre for Research on Biomolecular Interactions (CRBI)\u00a0at York University, which officially opens today,\u00a0aim to make discoveries that will impact global health care and the treatment of diseases.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Understanding the foundation of key interactions at the molecular level is the research focus at the\u00a0new centre,\u00a0which will be housed\u00a0in\u00a0York's Faculty of Science\u00a0&amp; Engineering. Scientists will study how biomolecules interact at every level\u00a0\u2013 from pure molecules to single cells to the entire organism. They will examine these interactions\u00a0under normal circumstances and in the development of a disease. Their research will result in a deeper understanding of the\u00a0\"mechanical\" changes that occur in disease during biomedical interactions that have gone awry.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The CRBI members have already been busy at work\u00a0exploring important molecular interactions of biomolecules such as nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and proteins.\u00a0With the formation of the centre, they will now\u00a0have the opportunity to combine their forces and share resources. The centre encompasses\u00a0faculty members and research teams that include\u00a0more than\u00a070 graduate students, research associates, postdoctoral fellows and undergraduate students.\u00a0 Researchers from chemistry and biology departments at York include Professors Gerald Audette, Samuel Benchimol, Kathy Hudak, Philip Johnson, Sergey Krylov (director), John McDermott,\u00a0Andrew White and Derek Wilson.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"1\" width=\"200\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20091124\/biomedicalgroup.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"265\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Above: Some of the members of the new Centre for Research on Biomolecular Interactions at York University. Missing from the photo are Professors Samuel Benchimol and Kathy Hudak.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The group\u2019s combined expertise, which varies\u00a0from analytical and physical chemistry to structural, cell and molecular biology,\u00a0provides an opportunity for\u00a0research projects to be pursued in an interdisciplinary and comprehensive manner. The team uses cutting-edge approaches to gain full understanding of key molecular players and events that can lead to disease, and by doing so,\u00a0hopes to address\u00a0prevention and future treatment of many diseases.<\/p>\n<p>The centre is bustling with energy and activities, and future plans include extending the centre\u2019s external and industry collaborations, launching a new peer-reviewed journal, <em>Journal of Biomolecular<\/em> <em>Interactions<\/em>, and hosting a research retreat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe creation of the Centre for Research on Biomolecular Interactions is an important step that will strengthen the existing collaborations and foster new ones at York University and beyond,\u201d says York chemistry Professor Sergey Krylov,\u00a0director of the CRBI and Canada Research Chair in Bioanalytical Chemistry.<span> \u201cThe centre is a nucleus for great researchers and it encourages a stimulating and cooperative environment. <\/span>We have energy, enthusiasm and research synergy; I anticipate our collaborative research will lead to advances in various areas including disease detection and understanding of disease processes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There will be an opening celebration for the CRBI today in the Seymour Schulich Building on York's Keele campus.
