{"id":32469,"date":"2009-12-17T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-12-17T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2009\/12\/17\/york-university-awarded-a-european-union-centre-of-excellence-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T14:51:21","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T19:51:21","slug":"york-university-awarded-a-european-union-centre-of-excellence-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2009\/12\/17\/york-university-awarded-a-european-union-centre-of-excellence-2\/","title":{"rendered":"York University awarded a European Union Centre of Excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[%ArtFullText%]--><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">York University has been awarded a grant to establish a European Union Centre of Excellence(EUCE). <span>Recognized for the excellence, breadth and depth of its European Union (EU) studies and scholarly activities, York will receive funding of $480,000 over three years to <\/span>integrate the University\u2019s existing research, teaching, outreach and networking activities on Europe and the European Union (EU), and introduce and facilitate new activities on the EU and EU-Canada relations<span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>York is recognized as a leader in European studies and has been actively building its concentration in EU studies. Over the past few years, York has attracted numerous new European-focused faculty appointments across a variety of disciplines, including law, political science, business, public administration and humanities. The hub of this activity has been the Canadian Centre for German &amp; European Studies (CCGES), whose affiliated faculty and staff form a natural constituency and administrative backbone for the activities planned by the new EUCE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are tremendously proud of York\u2019s leadership and research excellence in European studies,\u201d said Stan Shapson, vice-president research &amp; innovation. \u201cThe activities of the EUCE will promote understanding and knowledge of the European Union as a major player in the global political and economic system, and will be key in promoting the importance of the EU-Canada relationship, its political, economic, security and cultural dimensions, and the widening range of global and regional issues jointly addressed by the EU and Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With this award, York joins a network of two dozen EUCEs worldwide. York\u2019s EUCE will be hosted by <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20091214\/maasWEB.jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"138\" height=\"192\" align=\"right\" \/>CCGES and directed by <strong>Willem Maas (right)<\/strong>, Jean Monnet Chair in European Integration and professor of political science and public &amp; international affairs at\u00a0Glendon College.<\/p>\n<p>The EUCE\u2019s multidisciplinary team also includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Burkard Eberlein<\/strong>,\u00a0policy professor in the Schulich School of Business;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Roger Keil<\/strong>, director of the\u00a0CITY Institute and CCGES, and a professor in the Faculty of Environmental Studies;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heather MacRae<\/strong>,\u00a0professor in the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies (LA&amp;PS);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Peter McIsaac<\/strong>,\u00a0professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures &amp; Linguistics,\u00a0(LA&amp;PS);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ian Roberge<\/strong>,\u00a0professor\u00a0of\u00a0political science and public &amp; international affairs at\u00a0Glendon College;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Karen Robson, <\/strong>sociology professor in the Department of Sociology, (LA&amp;PS);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Craig Scott<\/strong>, director of the\u00a0<span><a href=\"http:\/\/nathanson.osgoode.yorku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nathanson Centre on Transnational Human Rights, Crime\u00a0&amp; Security<\/a><\/span><span>, and\u00a0professor in\u00a0Osgoode Hall Law School;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dagmar Soennecken<\/strong>,\u00a0professor in the\u00a0<span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/laps\/sppa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">School of Public Policy\u00a0&amp; Administration<\/a><\/span><span>, (LA&amp;PS);<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Leah Vosko<\/strong>, Canada Research Chair in Feminist Political Economy\u00a0and\u00a0professor in the\u00a0Department of Political Science, (LA&amp;PS);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Robert Wai<\/strong>,\u00a0professor in\u00a0Osgoode Hall Law School;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Peer Zumbansen<\/strong>,\u00a0Canada Research Chair in the Transnational\u00a0&amp; Comparative Law of Corporate Governance and professor in Osgoode Hall Law School.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About the European Union Centres of Excellence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Established in 1998 by the European Union, the network of European Union Centres of Excellence in universities provides information and education about the European Union.
