{"id":32631,"date":"2012-03-15T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-03-15T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2012\/03\/15\/wanted-innovative-ideas-for-making-ontario-more-accessible-2\/"},"modified":"2012-03-15T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2012-03-15T08:00:00","slug":"wanted-innovative-ideas-for-making-ontario-more-accessible-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2012\/03\/15\/wanted-innovative-ideas-for-making-ontario-more-accessible-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Wanted: Innovative 'IDeAs' for making Ontario more accessible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>York University students,\u00a0along with\u00a0students from other Ontario universities, are being challenged to put their creative minds to work to develop solutions that will make the world more accessible for people with disabilities, including new\u00a0ideas for devices, software, architectural design, awareness campaigns or policies.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cou.on.ca\/IDeA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Innovative Designs for Accessibility (IDeA)<\/a> competition\u00a0is an initiative organized\u00a0by the Council of Ontario Universities (COU), in partnership with the Government of Ontario. The province-wide competition\u00a0is being overseen by the IDeA Working Group, comprised of representatives from engineering and design Faculties at several Ontario universities.<\/p>\n<p>Students will vie for $3,000 in prizes, with entries that must address barriers to accessibility in five categories: attitudinal, physical\/structural, information and communications, technological, and systemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOntario universities are strongly committed to the important goal of leading the country towards greater accessibility,\u201d says Alastair Summerlee, chair of COU and\u00a0president of the University of Guelph. \u201cTapping into the innovative capabilities of our students is an excellent way to build awareness and to advance ideas that lead to a more accessible world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>York students can\u00a0find rules and registration information <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cou.on.ca\/IDeA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.\u00a0The deadline for contest submissions is <strong>March 31<\/strong>. Students interested in submitting their idea or concept should review the rules and criteria, register and then submit the concept by e-mail to <a href=\"mailto:ideas@yorku.ca\">ideas@yorku.ca<\/a>\u00a0by the end of the business on March 31.<\/p>\n<p>Submissions will first be evaluated by York University and then successful candidates will move on to a second round of judging conducted by a panel of experts in the five categories. Evaluations will be based on innovation, cost-effectiveness and practicality.
