Breadth, creativity, technical and analytical prowess are just some of the attributes needed by engineers of the future.<\/p>\n

That was the consensus of leading thinkers,\u00a0academics, engineers and students\u00a0who gathered at York's Keele campus on April 21 for \"Envisioning the Renaissance Engineer\", a day-long workshop to outline the academic promise\u00a0for the University's\u00a0expanded\u00a0School of Engineering.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis shall be a school of unique and new design,\u201d said Janusz Kozinski, dean of York\u2019s Faculty of Science & Engineering \"\"<\/a>and host of the workshop. \"Once completed,\" he said, \"the\u00a0School of Engineering will have an enormous impact on the field of engineering in Canada and beyond.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do we see engineering in the future?\u201d said York\u2019s President & Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri, in his welcoming remarks. \u201cOur vision is the creation of problem solvers who are broadly educated and socially responsible. We want to build a faculty that is inclusive in every respect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Underpinning this vision for the\u00a0School of Engineering will be academic partnerships with Osgoode Hall Law School and the Schulich School of Business and York's other faculties.<\/p>\n

For philanthropist Pierre Lassonde, chair of the Franco Nevada Corporation,\u00a0whose generous donation of\u00a0$25 million to York University<\/a> has made\u00a0possible the expansion of the\u00a0engineering school,\u00a0attending the\u00a0event one day after celebrating his birthday, along with the anticipated\u00a0discussion of the\u00a0concept of the renaissance engineer,\u00a0were gifts\u00a0worthy of 65 candles.<\/p>\n

In his welcome to the workshop participants,\u00a0Lassonde described his vision\u00a0for the engineer of the future. The renaissance engineer, he said,\u00a0must\u00a0be like Michelangelo, the Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect, poet and engineer. Renaissance engineers would be\u00a0able to create their own masterpieces, dream and design innovative technical solutions to problems, be entrepreneurial in business and understand the romance of lifelong learning.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u00a0is\u00a0a momentous time. I find myself looking forward and backward,\u201d he said. \u201cOur engineers, our graduates must be fully equipped, fully ready for any situation they encounter. Builders, creative people, developers of solutions \u2013 they must not be harnessed by the stiffness of earlier generations. In the future, new approaches, new fixes, flexible men and women are what will be required.\u201d<\/p>\n

The workshop began\u00a0with a keynote address by Diane Freeman, an engineering consultant, Waterloo city councillor and the past president of the Professional Engineers of Ontario. The day continued with morning and afternoon\u00a0discussions.\u00a0Technical presentations on entrepreneurship and project-based learning\u00a0rounded out the day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe word \u2018renaissance\u2019 speaks of revival and of rebirth,\u201d\u00a0Freeman said. \u201cAptly, it refers to seasons of transition and to change makers. This is what engineers are, not just automobile designers.\u201d<\/p>\n

She spoke about the need for creative solutions\u00a0by engineers to solve deeply rooted problems.\u00a0Freeman called for engineers to become involved in public policy and stressed the need for collaboration between engineers, citizens and public policy makers.<\/p>\n

Highlights of the day's panel discussions <\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The Future Engineers\u00a0Session that followed featured Marisa Sterling of the Professional Engineers of Ontario; Tom Lee, chief education officer, Quanser Inc.; and Sal Alajeck, global engineering team lead, Engineers Without Borders.<\/p>\n

Sterling said three characteristics should be encouraged in the engineers of the future\u00a0\u2013 flexibility, strategic thinking and entrepreneurial spirit. \u201cEngineers would need to continually evolve, adopt a strategic mindset and look for future gaps, opportunities and cycles.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to current trends in engineering, Freeman highlighted that\u00a0there would be a need for new kinds of engineers in areas such as seismic engineering and entrepreneurial engineering.<\/p>\n

Lee said that future engineers should be equipped to handle global challenges and\u00a0issues such as climate change and renewable energy.\u00a0He noted\u00a0that elementary students are making robots and engineering fundamentals are now being taught in\u00a0some\u00a0Ontario high schools,\u00a0something he said was\u00a0not being recognized by universities.<\/p>\n

Alajeck suggested engineering programs consider the big picture, including\u00a0teaching engineers to be better communicators\u00a0and\u00a0offering interdisciplinary studies\u00a0in creative problem solving and\u00a0system thinking. \"Can they be a loving engineer with the ability to transcend relationships and build communities? Can they change the givens? Would the approach to the renaissance engineer be additive or holistic?\"\u00a0asked Alajeck. \"Can York University's School of Engineering challenge the existing framework of engineering education or go against the will of industry?\"<\/p>\n

The\u00a0afternoon Renaissance Engineer\u00a0Session featured\u00a0York natural science Professors Richard Jarrell and Edward Jones-Imhotep speaking about trends\u00a0that they think\u00a0would affect the renaissance engineer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jarrell said he was worried about the text\u00a0and e-mail\u00a0heavy world\u00a0of non-present communications, which\u00a0he called socially bleak.<\/p>\n

\"We need to be citizens first. Citizens have adaptability and are present in the world. They are taught to move about and seek a broader education,\" he said.\"Flexibility, adaptability and\u00a0broad-based education are important. There is a need to be nimble\u00a0and move into a variety of careers because the broader the education, the more useful the engineer, and the\u00a0better the citizen, the better the communicator and the more visionary the human being.\"<\/p>\n

\"Renaissance has an element of rebirth, but also of\u00a0recovering what has been lost,\" said Jones-Imhotep. He cited\u00a0Galileo Galilei\u00a0and other renaissance scientists of the 1600s. Many,\u00a0he noted,\u00a0were in essence\u00a0\"renaissance engineers\". They were also musicians and they\u00a0actively explored\u00a0and embraced other domains, including\u00a0art,\u00a0music and languages.<\/p>\n

Following the discussion, engineering Professor John Orr of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, in Worcester, Mass., explored project-based learning.<\/p>\n

Orr's presentation was\u00a0followed by a panel discussion featuring\u00a0Troy d'Ambrosio, director of the \"\"<\/a>Lassonde Entrepreneur Center at the University of Utah, and Gabriel Chan of the peer-to-peer learning platform NoteWagon.<\/p>\n

They discussed how entrepreneurial engineers\u00a0develop\u00a0solutions to everyday problems. Both d'Ambrosio and Chan highlighted the\u00a0importance of universities in\u00a0encouraging and incubating business and engineering start ups. They highlighted that\u00a0business planning is a fundamental and integral skill for renaissance engineers. d'Ambrosio described the\u00a0experience of the University of Utah and its engineering school's effort to marry business with engineering, which resulted in creation of the Lassonde Entrepreneur Center at the University of Utah.<\/p>\n

The day ended with a thoughtful\u00a0observation\u00a0from Lassonde. \"Aspire to inspire, before you expire.\"<\/p>\n
