{"id":32705,"date":"2012-04-30T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-04-30T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2012\/04\/30\/two-york-profs-receive-ontario-early-researcher-awards-2\/"},"modified":"2012-04-30T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2012-04-30T08:00:00","slug":"two-york-profs-receive-ontario-early-researcher-awards-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2012\/04\/30\/two-york-profs-receive-ontario-early-researcher-awards-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Two York profs receive Ontario Early Researcher Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>York Professors Natasha Myers and Thilo Womelsdorf have been awarded $100,000 each in funding under the Ontario government\u2019s Early Researcher Awards program. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ontario\u2019s Ministry of Economic Development\u00a0&amp; Innovation announced the awards Monday. \u00a0York University\u2019s research investment of $50,000 will match the funds for the award.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mri.gov.on.ca\/english\/programs\/era\/program.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Early Researcher Awards<\/a> program helps promising, recently appointed Ontario researchers build research teams of undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research associates and technicians. The goal of the program is to improve Ontario\u2019s ability to attract and retain the best and brightest research talent. Ontario\u2019s Early Researcher Awards investment of $8.68 million will support 62 emerging researchers and their teams at 19 institutions across the province.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/thiwomlab.apps01.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thilo Womelsdorf<\/a>, of the Department of Biology in the Faculty of Science\u00a0&amp; Engineering and member of York\u2019s Centre for Vision Research, is studying how individuals focus their attention on one object, thought or event, while ignoring other external information. \u00a0His research examines the three major regions of the brain that guide and determine selective attention, to find out how they work and interact.\u00a0\u00a0Womelsdorf\u2019s research will identify how networks of brain cells coordinate separable attention information using state-of-the-art technologies and will critically advance hotly-debated, neuro-economic decision making theories.\u00a0The research will lead to a better understanding of various diseases that widely affect health, education and the economy of Ontario.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/nmyers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Natasha Myers<\/a>, of the Department of Anthropology in the Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies, examines how plants are acquiring new status and visibility in our culture. Specifically, she explores the ways that artists and scientists are transforming our everyday assumptions through artworks and experiments that render plants as active, sensing organisms.
