{"id":33066,"date":"2016-05-18T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-05-18T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2016\/05\/18\/york-u-invention-a-breakthrough-in-rapid-detection-of-e-coli-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-29T15:02:57","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T20:02:57","slug":"york-u-invention-a-breakthrough-in-rapid-detection-of-e-coli-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2016\/05\/18\/york-u-invention-a-breakthrough-in-rapid-detection-of-e-coli-2\/","title":{"rendered":"York U invention a breakthrough in rapid detection of E. coli"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tragedies like the E. coli outbreak in Ontario\u2019s Walkerton in May 2000 could be averted today with a new invention by researchers at York University that detects the deadly contaminant in drinking water early.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_212187\" style=\"width: 202px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2014\/12\/Sushantra-Mitra.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212187\" class=\" wp-image-212187\" src=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2014\/12\/Sushantra-Mitra.jpg\" alt=\"Sushanta Mitra\" width=\"192\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-212187\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sushanta Mitra<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe have developed a hydrogel based rapid E. coli detection system that will turn red when E. coli is present,\u201d said Professor Sushanta Mitra, Lassonde School of Engineering. \u201cIt will detect the bacteria right at the water source before people start drinking contaminated water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yorku.ca\/files\/innovation-in-water-quality-monitoring.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new technology<\/a> has cut down the time taken to detect E. coli from a few days to just a couple of hours. It is also an inexpensive way to test drinking water (and estimated C$3 per test), which is a boon for many developing countries, as much as it is for remote areas of Canada\u2019s north.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a significant improvement over the earlier version of the device, the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yorku.ca\/files\/SivaGunda-MonitoringWaterKit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mobile Water Kit<\/a>, that required more steps, handling of liquid chemicals and so on,\u201d said Mitra, associate vice-president of Research at York U. \u201cThe entire system is developed using a readily available plunger-tube assembly. It\u2019s so user friendly that even an untrained person can do the test using this kit.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_231119\" style=\"width: 281px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2016\/05\/mobile-water-kitFEATURED-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-231119\" class=\" wp-image-231119\" src=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2016\/05\/mobile-water-kitFEATURED-.jpg\" alt=\"Mobile Water Kit \" width=\"271\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-231119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mobile Water Kit<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Traditional methods of testing for E. coli contamination involves collecting water samples to send to an appropriate microbiological lab where the bacteria is cultured before a plate count is done to detect E. coli presence.<\/p>\n<p>This new testing device uses the porous hydrogel matrix, developed by Mitra\u2019s team at his <a href=\"http:\/\/mntl.apps01.yorku.ca\/\">Micro &amp; Nano-scale Transport Laboratory<\/a>, that cages specific enzymatic substrates that release certain enzymes in E. coli cells. These enzymes then chemically react with the substrates to change colour. If there is no E. coli, the colour of the hydrogel won\u2019t change, as there is no chemical reaction.<\/p>\n<p>The results of the water test can be instantly broadcast using a mobile app already developed by the team.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.yorku.ca\/files\/Analyst-cover.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-231184\" src=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2016\/05\/analystWebimage.jpg\" alt=\"analystWebimage\" width=\"314\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>The breakthrough invention has resulted in the formation of Glacierclean Technologies Inc., an Innovation York spinoff company, in partnership with York U.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have received a significant number of queries from related industries.
