Howard Memorial Lecture Series event, hosted by York University\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cvr.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centre for Vision Research<\/a> (CVR).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_256727\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-256727\" src=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/10\/Alan-Yuille.jpg\" alt=\"Alan Yuille\" width=\"244\" height=\"288\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alan Yuille<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Alan Yuille, a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor from the\u00a0departments of Cognitive Science and Computer Science at John Hopkins University, will deliver a talk titled \u201cDeep Networks and Beyond\u201d on Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. in Room 103, Life Science Building.<\/p>\n<p>Deep networks are very successful for computer vision applications, provided there are large annotated datasets enabling supervised learning and testing, says Yuille, but there remain important challenges.<\/p>\n<p>During his talk, Yuille will examine these challenges including: \u201cunrepresentative datasets,\u201d where the deep networks are sensitive to adversarial attacks, changes in context, and to rare or hazardous events; \u2018limited supervised training data,\u201d which requires transfer learning to deal with few training examples and weak supervision; and \u201carchitecture design,\u201d where the goal is to automatically search over deep network architectures or to couple deep networks with other machine learning techniques such as random forests. This talk will address all these issues using state-of-the-art computer vision applications.<\/p>\n<p>Yuille received a BA in mathematics from the University of Cambridge in 1976. His PhD on theoretical physics, supervised by Professor Stephen W. Hawking, was approved in 1981. He was a research scientist in the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at MIT and the Division of Applied Sciences at Harvard University from 1982 to 1988. He served as an assistant and associate professor at Harvard until 1996, and was a senior research scientist at the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute from 1996 to 2002. Yuille became a full professor of statistics at the University of California, Los Angeles with joint appointments in computer science, psychiatry and psychology, and later moved to Johns Hopkins University in January 2016.
