ManagingLife, the app\u2019s developer, collaborated with experts in pain, mental health and data science to apply data science techniques that are unprecedented in health care and pain management.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_250133\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-250133\" src=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/02\/Joel-Katz.jpg\" alt=\"Joel Katz\" width=\"178\" height=\"241\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joel Katz<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The analysis involved three groups of York U researchers, including Professor and\u00a0Canada Research Chair in Health Psychology Joel Katz (Human Pain Mechanisms Lab); Professor and York Research Chair (Tier II) Jane Heffernan (Centre for Disease Modelling, Mathematics and Statistics); and Professor Paul Ritvo (Health Behaviour Change Lab).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_258296\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-258296 \" src=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/11\/JaneHeffernan-300x300.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/11\/JaneHeffernan-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/11\/JaneHeffernan-59x59.jpg 59w, https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/11\/JaneHeffernan-90x90.jpg 90w, https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/11\/JaneHeffernan-75x75.jpg 75w, https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/11\/JaneHeffernan.jpg 636w\" alt=\"\" width=\"204\" height=\"204\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jane Heffernan<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Data for this analysis came from users of the Manage My Pain app, created for the millions of people with chronic pain who want to better understand their conditions and are looking to better communicate with their doctors. Researchers used data mining techniques to define pain volatility \u2013 a new measure to describe how the severity of pain changes over time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_258681\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-258681\" src=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/11\/Paul-Ritvo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"243\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paul Ritvo<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Machine learning techniques were then used to predict users\u2019 pain volatility levels six months in the future, based on the information entered into the app in the first month. Prior to this research, the data required to conduct such an analysis have been previously limited to pain outcomes collected by traditional methods of assessing pain, such as paper-based questionnaires.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers believe this innovative, data-driven approach to analysis could help shape future treatments of pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the significant increase in data available and by applying machine learning methods, we can better understand how pain experiences change and better understand how that might evolve in the future,\u201d said Katz, one of the lead authors of the study. \u201cThis study may help to identify risk factors for heightened volatility and, therefore, to potentially prevent the development of high pain volatility through effective interventions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study used data from 782 users who collectively recorded more than 329,000 data points.
