Image: CDC<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>From CIHR, Assistant Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yorku.ca\/experts\/?name_or_keyword=aaida&amp;research_area=&amp;submit=Search+the+Guide&amp;search=Y\">Aaida Mamuji<\/a>, coordinator of the Disaster and Emergency Management (DEM) Program at York, will receive $499,121 to examine how Chinese diaspora communities in globalized urban centres are coping with COVID-19. From SSHRC, Assistant Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.yorku.ca\/experts\/?name_or_keyword=Eric+B.+Kennedy&amp;research_area=&amp;submit=Search+the+Guide&amp;search=Y\">Eric Kennedy<\/a> of the DEM program will receive $428,816 to track how Canadians understand and perceive the outbreak, while Assistant Professor of sociology <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yorku.ca\/experts\/?name_or_keyword=Cary+Wu&amp;research_area=&amp;submit=Search+the+Guide&amp;search=Y\">Cary Wu<\/a> will receive $176,256, from CIHR,\u00a0 to study issues of trust and how it hampers prevention and control measures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYork University is delighted to learn of CIHR and SSHRC\u2019s support for three timely projects from the Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies,\u201d said Interim Vice-President Research &amp; Innovation Rui Wang. \u201cThis exemplifies York\u2019s leadership in public health response to COVID-19 and its impact. With this funding, York will provide essential insights in the rapid research response to contribute to the global effort to contain the COVID-19 outbreak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the frequency of disease outbreaks increases in a connected world with rapid urbanization, there is a need to understand how public fears, stigmatization and attitudes, along with misinformation, affect public health efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLA&amp;PS has always been about producing research that has real and immediate impact in the world, and we are incredibly proud of the work of our DEM and sociology researchers in their respective fields \u2013 especially as it concerns public issues as timely as the recent COVID-19 outbreak,\u201d said the Dean of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies J.J. McMurtry.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>More about the projects<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_14452\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14452 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/2025\/01\/Aaida-Mamuji-scaled.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" alt=\"Aaida Mamuji\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14452\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-14452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aaida Mamuji<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mamuji\u2019s project aims to understand the consequences of COVID-19 as experienced by Chinese communities in Toronto and Nairobi, including the social impacts of discrimination and Sinophobia on personal well-being and livelihoods. Her team, which includes Associate Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yorku.ca\/experts\/index.php?dept=&amp;mid=1462654\">Jack Rozdilsky<\/a> of the DEM program, plans to work with emergency management professionals in both locations to develop a culturally specific public education campaign and knowledge-sharing events to counter misinformation, disinformation, stigma and fear, and to promote community cohesion.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14453\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14453 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/848\/2025\/01\/Eric-Kennedy-150x150.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" alt=\"Eric Kennedy\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14453\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-14453\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eric Kennedy<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Kennedy\u2019s project, which will include Associate Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/health.yorku.ca\/health-profiles\/index.php?dept=&amp;mid=1386877\">Claudia Chaufan<\/a> of York\u2019s Faculty of Health and Associate Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uoguelph.ca\/psychology\/users\/kieran-odoherty\">Kieran O\u2019Doherty<\/a> of the University of Guelph, will mount a large-scale, two-year coast-to-coast survey to document how Canadians understand the outbreak. It will explore who Canadians trust for information on COVID-19, how they\u2019re adapting their behaviours, and how their perceptions of risk changes throughout the next couple of years.
