YCAR offers or adjudicates nine awards<\/a> to graduate students at York University on an annual basis. In 2020, 21 students received over $40,000 in support of their research, fieldwork and language studies. In each Update over the summer, we will introduce the 2020 winners. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this issue, we congratulate Yasir Hameed<\/strong>, the 2020 recipient of the Nirvan Bhavan Graduate Fellowship<\/a><\/strong>. Yasir is a doctoral student at the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University and a YCAR Graduate Associate. He has a bachelor\u2019s degree in Architecture (Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi) and a master\u2019s degree in City and Regional Planning (UC Berkeley). His work explores questions of public space, housing, safety, marginalization, resistance and social justice in cities. His dissertation research will consider how public safety, and thus the right to the city and its public spaces, is defined for marginalized people in the Indian capital of New Delhi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nirvan Bhavan Graduate Fellowship<\/a> is offered annually to a York University graduate student who is engaged in research on the arts, society and\/or culture of India.
