There is value and strength in diversity. In order for us to better serve our communities, we need to amplify all voices of and create a space where everyone can contribute to improving our legal systems and access to justice. Osgoode Hall Law School at York University views law as so much more than a means to an end, but a journey that empowers everyone to have a meaningful impact in their community and in the world.
Diversity in law cannot happen on its own, it requires action. That’s why we are actively working to drive real change for a better future. Osgoode Hall Law School thrives on inclusivity. Our admissions process goes beyond academic achievement and aims to identify outstanding individuals who are as committed to their studies as their community engagement. Over the years, Osgoode has introduced initiatives that reduce barriers to our programs to ensure that each student cohort reflects the diversity of our community. Our holistic approach to admissions helps us identify exceptional applicants with diverse life experiences who have often overcome challenges and barriers to post-secondary and professional education. Through this approach we build a class of law students that is inclusive and representative of Canada's diverse population.
At Osgoode, we have implemented programs that champion people with diverse identities and experiences by teaching the necessary skills to serve them effectively. Our Community and Legal Aid Services Program (CLASP) prioritizes service to underserved communities such as persons living with mental health barriers, youth, female survivors of domestic violence, and members of the Jane-Finch community. Our Investor Protection Clinic gives students the opportunity with individuals who believe their investments were mishandled and who cannot afford a lawyer. These programs are designed to give students the necessary skillset to provide engaged, ethical, and compassionate service to the members of our community.
Osgoode Hall Law School provides students with a superior legal education through an experiential and relevant curriculum. Our faculty is a welcoming and inclusive academic community that consists of globally renowned thought leaders. Our clinical programs encourage students to solve real world problems by applying theoretical knowledge to deepen their understanding of how law functions and enhance their readiness for practice. Experiential learning is centered upon a pedagogical approach in which students are responsible for real client matters under the supervision of experienced lawyers. Students explore issues of professional identity and values, skill development, contextualized problem-solving, and the systemic impacts of law. Above all, Osgoode is fostering the development of reflective legal practitioners.
At Osgoode Hall Law School, we view law as a catalyst for change. We are unafraid and unapologetic in our pursuit of justice. Graduates leave Osgoode equipped to make a positive impact on the world and search out legal solutions that are grounded in ethical principles will result in a more just society for all.
