Dear York Community,<\/p>\n

Last November, our community experienced a deeply troubling incident at Vari Hall.<\/p>\n

As a University committed to creating inclusive, equitable and sustainable communities, we understand our responsibility in protecting the role of universities as places where rigorous and respectful debate can take place to tackle the difficult challenges we face. As we observe world events in the months since, we understand perhaps more than ever the costs of prejudice and discrimination.<\/p>\n

I am grateful for the work that we have undertaken to thoroughly review that incident and to reflect on the relevant policies, processes and community standards that are intended to ensure freedom of speech for all in our community. It is with much thanks that I announce that Justice Cromwell has completed a thoughtful, independent review of the incident, and our Internal Working Group, co-chaired by Sheila Cote-Meek, Vice President, Equity, People and Culture, and Lucy Fromowitz, Vice-Provost, Students has had an opportunity to reflect on the recommendations in their own Report to the Community.<\/p>\n

Together, the reports and recommended actions provide a roadmap for fulfilling our guiding values. The University accepts all of the recommendations put forward and will immediately begin implementing them. En novembre dernier, un incident profond\u00e9ment troublant est survenu au Pavillon Vari. En raison de notre engagement \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des communaut\u00e9s inclusives, \u00e9quitables et durables, nous sommes conscients de notre responsabilit\u00e9 dans la protection du r\u00f4le des universit\u00e9s en tant que lieux de d\u00e9bats rigoureux et respectueux afin de relever des d\u00e9fis difficiles. Apr\u00e8s avoir observ\u00e9 les \u00e9v\u00e9nements mondiaux des mois r\u00e9cents, nous comprenons plus que jamais le co\u00fbt des pr\u00e9jug\u00e9s et de la discrimination.<\/p>\n

Je suis reconnaissante du travail entrepris par l\u2019Universit\u00e9 pour examiner attentivement cet incident et pour songer aux politiques, processus et normes communautaires appropri\u00e9s afin de garantir la libert\u00e9 d\u2019expression pour tous les membres de notre communaut\u00e9.
