It engages students in mathematical reasoning, creative problem solving and team working. We believe that students benefit greatly if they learn at an early age that how exciting and valuable it is to apply mathematics to real world problems.

As the 3rd International Mathematical Modelling Challenge (IM2C) is coming, we hold the three-day “Math for Real” workshop to help students gain confidence in the competition. Although the Workshop is intended for students in Grades 9-12, teachers are also welcome to attend. Participants will have an inspiring experience in modeling, programming, technical writing, and team-building. At the end of the workshop, the participants will walk through the process via a mini mock contest. In addition, plenary talks on math modeling given by professors will take you to unexpected places.

Registration fee:

$50 per participant (lunches included, spaces limited).

Students with financial needs can apply for fee waiver if a letter of support from your teacher is provided

Organizers:

IMMC-Canada Committee:

Steven Chen, Kosal Chhin, Jane Heffernan, Robert Jordan, Neal Madras, Varvara Nika, Jianhong Wu, Jane Zhang, Hongmei Zhu

Schedule:

March 12, Monday:
9:30 – 9:45: Opening Remarks (Huaxiong Huang, the Fields Institute)
9:45 – 10:45: Mathive Warm-up (Varvara Nika, Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School)
10:45 – 11:00: Break
11:00 – 12:00: Graph Theory and Scheduling (Neal Madras, York University)
12:00 – 13:00: Lunch at Mother’s Dumplings
13:00 – 14:00: Think about Modeling (Varvara Nika, Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School)
14:00 – 14:15: Break
14:15 – 15:00: Think about Modeling (Varvara Nika, Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School)
15:00 – 15:30: Have fun!
