{"id":1371,"date":"2020-07-28T11:15:34","date_gmt":"2020-07-28T15:15:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/?page_id=1371"},"modified":"2026-04-21T09:12:32","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T13:12:32","slug":"academic-decisions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/my-degree\/grades\/academic-decisions\/","title":{"rendered":"Academic Decisions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>York University divides the academic year into academic sessions \u2013 the Fall\/Winter session and the Summer session.&nbsp;At the end of each academic session you will be provided with an Academic Decision, which indicates your progression status in your program (e.g. eligible to proceed).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\"><strong>Grade Report Academic Decisions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The following list explains the meaning of the various items and codes that could appear on your Grade Report. These codes sometimes change; please connect with our team of academic advisors\u00a0if you have any questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>May Proceed Only in an Ordinary Program \u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>This means that your grade point average is below the minimum required for proceeding in an Honours degree for your particular major. You will automatically be put in a bachelor program in the same or first major if in a double major. If you would like to choose a different major, please read the information under <a href=\"http:\/\/science.yorku.ca\/current-students\/academic-advising\/program-changes\/\">Program Change<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>May Continue in Honours (Not in Biology) \u2013&nbsp;<\/strong>This means you do not meet the minimum major average of 6.00 required for this major. You must choose a new major. Please see <a href=\"http:\/\/science.yorku.ca\/current-students\/academic-advising\/program-changes\/\">Program Change<\/a> for more information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Must Choose Major Other Than Biochemistry, Computational Mathematics, Environmental Science, or Space Science&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 This means that you must choose a new major in a bachelor program. Enrolment is blocked until you have changed your program. Please see <a href=\"http:\/\/science.yorku.ca\/current-students\/academic-advising\/program-changes\/\">Program Change<\/a> for more information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Advising Required&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 This indicates that you are blocked from enrolling in courses in the upcoming session. Please book an advising appointment with the appropriate department.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Limited Credits Allowed<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 If you are in a bachelor program and do not meet the minimum GPA required for graduation, you may take up to 102 credits in order to raise your GPA. Once you have completed 102 credits, you will automatically be blocked from further enrolment. At that point, if you still do not meet the required GPA for graduation, please contact Science Academic Services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Academic Warning&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Alerts you to the fact that, should you fail additional credits in future sessions or fail to raise your overall GPA you may be ineligible to proceed. For more detailed information, please refer to&nbsp;Rules and Regulations for the Faculty of Science&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/calendars.students.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Undergraduate Calendar<\/a>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Conditions<\/strong><br>- Students on academic warning must achieve a cumulative grade point average of at least 4.00 within the next 24 credits taken, or earn a sessional grade point average of at least 5.00 in the session in which that 24th credit is taken and in each subsequent session until the cumulative grade point average reaches 4.00, or be required to withdraw. Students whose cumulative grade point average on at least 24 York credits is below 2.50 will be required to withdraw for 12 months.<br>- Failure to Meet Academic Warning Conditions \u2013 BA and iBA students on academic warning who fail to meet the academic warning conditions must withdraw for 12 months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Required to Withdraw&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Students whose academic record shows marked weakness may be required to withdraw from their studies for twelve months, during which they are encouraged to identify and remedy any problems which may have contributed materially to their failure to perform up to their potential, and to reflect on their reasons for pursuing a university education. The following regulations apply to required withdrawal:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Grade point average below 2.50:<\/strong>&nbsp;students whose cumulative grade point average on at least 24 credits is below 2.50 must withdraw for 12 months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Students whose grade point average is below 4.00 and equal to or greater than 2.50:<\/strong>&nbsp;students who have received an academic warning for a cumulative grade point average below 4.00 must satisfy the academic warning conditions as specified above or be required to withdraw for 12 months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reactivation After Required Withdrawal<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 <\/strong>Students who have been required to withdraw may apply for reactivation after the requisite period of absence by submitting a request through <a href=\"http:\/\/registrar.yorku.ca\/enrol\/reactivate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reactivation<\/a>. Students who return to their studies after such a required withdrawal (as well as those who have been allowed to continue their studies by virtue of a petition to the Petitions Committee) receive a debarment warning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Debarment Warning&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 Alerts you to the fact that should you fail additional credits in a future session or fail to raise your overall GPA you will be debarred for a period of two years.&nbsp;For more details, please refer to&nbsp;Rules and Regulations for the Faculty of Science&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/calendars.students.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Undergraduate Calendar<\/a><\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Conditions:<\/strong> Students on debarment warning must achieve a cumulative grade point average of at least 4.00 within the next 24 credits taken or earn a sessional grade point average of at least 5.00 in the session in which the 24th credit is taken and in each subsequent session until the cumulative average reaches 4.00, and must then maintain this average. Students who do not fulfil these conditions will be debarred from the University. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Debarment<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 <\/strong>Students who have been debarred may be re-admitted in some subsequent session only if they give convincing evidence that they can profit from university work. Applications for re-admission are not normally entertained in less than two years from the date of debarment. Applications must be submitted to the <a href=\"http:\/\/futurestudents.yorku.ca\">Admissions Office<\/a>. Students who are re-admitted (as well as those who have been allowed to continue their studies by virtue of a petition) receive an academic probation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Academic Probation&nbsp;\u2013 <\/strong>Students who have been debarred and who subsequently resume their studies in the Faculty whether by petitioning to continue without interruption or by applying for readmission, receive an academic probation. Students on academic probation must meet the debarment warning conditions outlined above; otherwise, they will be debarred.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Failed to Gain Standing&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 This means that you may not register for the Fall\/Winter session unless you are readmitted to the Faculty. After a one-year period, if you feel you have a valid reason to expect you will be more successful in your studies in the future, you may reapply to the Faculty of Science through the Office of Admissions. However, there is no guarantee that you will be readmitted. Applicable to BSc, iBSc, BASc, and BSc (Tech) students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:&nbsp;<\/strong>Students admitted to the Fall\/Winter 2001-2002 Session and subsequent sessions, will be required to have an overall GPA of 4.00 to graduate with a bachelor's degree and an overall GPA of 5.00 to graduate with an Honours bachelor's degree, except biology(6.00 science GPA) or biochemistry(5.50 science GPA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div
