It was the first time since 2019 that the event could be held in-person.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Buzzing with undergraduate researchers, faculty members and staff, the conference was an opportunity for recipients of NSERC Undergraduate Summer Research Awards (USRA), Dean\u2019s Undergraduate Research Awards (DURA), and York Science Scholars Awards (YSSA) to present their summer research projects and to meet other awardees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fifty-five students from the Faculties of Science, Health, Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies, and Environmental &amp; Urban Change, and the School of Arts, Media, Performance &amp; Design attended and shared their research projects and findings through talks and poster presentations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event opened with welcoming remarks from the Faculty of Science Associate Dean of Students <strong>Michael Scheid<\/strong> and the Faculty of Health Associate Dean of Research <strong>Chris Ardern<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope that your research experiences have given you a deeper perspective of what frontline research is all about, helped you learn new skills and more about your interests, and led to new friendships and collaborations,\u201d said Scheid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2022\/08\/Mayha-receiving-her-award-and-certificate.jpg\" alt=\"Mayha receiving her award and certificate\" class=\"wp-image-19939\" width=\"531\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2022\/08\/Mayha-receiving-her-award-and-certificate.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2022\/08\/Mayha-receiving-her-award-and-certificate-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 531px) 100vw, 531px\" \/><figcaption>Awardee Mahya Rezaeifarimani (centre) pictured with Associate Vice-President of Research Jennifer Hyndman (left) and Faculty of Science Associate Dean of Research &amp; Partnerships Vivian Saridakis (right)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The first talk of the day was presented by Professor <strong>Jane Heffernan<\/strong>, who delivered a keynote address on modelling immunity, focusing particularly on COVID-19. Ten students then presented talks in a morning session, and the remaining students presented posters in an afternoon session. The student presentations were judged by faculty members, postdocs and graduate students and the winners for best presentations were announced at the end of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following students received awards for their poster presentations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Minoosh Fathi<\/strong> \u2013 First place (tied) for the presentation \u201cPhylogenetic history and molecular evolution of vertebrate opsins,\u201d supervised by biology Professor <strong>Ryan Schott<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Mahya Rezaeifarimani<\/strong> \u2013 First place (tied) for the poster presentation \u201cSynthesis of Monodisperse Silica Nanoparticles and the Incorporation of Fluorophores,\u201d supervised by chemistry Professor <strong>Jennifer Chen<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Selin Tahir<\/strong> \u2013 Third place for the poster presentation \u201cA scoping review of the literature on malaria statistical models and development of a cross-country predictive model for malaria in the Global South,\u201d supervised by Professor <strong>Jude Kong<\/strong> in the Department of Mathematics &amp; Statistics<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The following students received awards for their oral presentations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2022\/08\/Aleeza-Qayyum-presenting-a-talk-at-the-conference.-She-received-the-first-place-award-in-the-oral-presentation-category.-768x508-1.jpg\" alt=\"Aleeza Qayyum presenting a talk at the conference\" class=\"wp-image-19941\" width=\"531\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2022\/08\/Aleeza-Qayyum-presenting-a-talk-at-the-conference.-She-received-the-first-place-award-in-the-oral-presentation-category.-768x508-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2022\/08\/Aleeza-Qayyum-presenting-a-talk-at-the-conference.-She-received-the-first-place-award-in-the-oral-presentation-category.-768x508-1-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 531px) 100vw, 531px\" \/><figcaption>Aleeza Qayyum presenting at the conference. Qayyum received the first place award in the oral presentation category<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Aleeza Qayyum<\/strong> \u2013 First place for the presentation \u201cThe Hyperphosphorylation of Amyloidogenic Tau,\u201d supervised by chemistry Professor <strong>Derek Wilson<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Areeba Chaudhury<\/strong> \u2013 Second place for the presentation \u201cGeneration of Xeno Nucleic Acid (XNA) Aptamers Against Human \u03b1-Thrombin using T3 Ligase-catalyzed OligOnucleotide PolymERizations (LOOPER),\u201d supervised by chemistry Professor <strong>Ryan Hili<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Claire Del Zotto<\/strong> \u2013 Third place for the presentation \u201cAnalysing Plant-Pollinator Interactions Along an Urbanisation Gradient,\u201d supervised by biology Professor <strong>Sandra Rehan<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The event closed with remarks from Faculty of Science Associate Dean of Research &amp; Partnerships <strong>Vivian Saridakis<\/strong> and Associate Vice-President of Research <strong>Jennifer Hyndman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents, it has been an honour to listen to your presentations today,\u201d said Saridakis in her closing remarks. \u201cI know a lot of hard work went into your research projects and putting together your abstracts and presentations for today\u2019s event.
