{"id":20174,"date":"2022-09-07T13:49:54","date_gmt":"2022-09-07T17:49:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/?p=20174"},"modified":"2022-09-07T13:49:56","modified_gmt":"2022-09-07T17:49:56","slug":"professors-jianhong-wu-and-jane-heffernan-appointed-york-research-chairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/2022\/09\/07\/professors-jianhong-wu-and-jane-heffernan-appointed-york-research-chairs\/","title":{"rendered":"Professors Jianhong Wu and Jane Heffernan appointed York Research Chairs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Congratulations to Professors <strong>Jianhong Wu<\/strong> and <strong>Jane Heffernan<\/strong>, Department of Mathematics &amp; Statistics, for joining the York Research Chairs (YRC) program \u2013 the University\u2019s internal counterpart to the national Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program that recognizes outstanding researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are among the ninth cohort of researchers to be appointed since the establishment of the program in 2015. These YRCs\u2019 terms run for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe York Research Chairs program is an important component of institutional supports for research, reflecting our commitment to addressing complex global issues and driving positive change in our local and global communities,\u201d said President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton. \u201cThis year\u2019s YRCs have made important contributions in their fields, and their future work promises to augment our understanding of societal challenges, including public health and rising threats to democracy. I want to congratulate all our YRCs and thank them for their continued dedication to research excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The YRC program seeks to build research recognition and capacity, with excellence in research, scholarship and associated creative activity serving as selection criteria. It consists of two tiers: Tier 1 is open to established research leaders at the rank of full professor; Tier 2 is aimed at emerging research leaders within 15 years of their first academic appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2022\/09\/Jianhong-Wu-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20179\" width=\"175\" height=\"216\"\/><figcaption> <strong>Jianhong Wu<\/strong> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jianhong Wu \u2013 Tier 1 York Research Chair in Industrial and Applied Mathematics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wu is an expert in dynamical systems, disease modelling and vaccine evaluation. His YRC program aims, in part, to understand biological and physical systems wherein predation occurs. The research will contribute to the University\u2019s growing capacities in disaster and emergency management and in AI research.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2022\/09\/Jane-Heffernan-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Jane Heffernan\" class=\"wp-image-20181\" width=\"175\" height=\"234\"\/><figcaption> <strong>Jane Heffernan<\/strong> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jane Heffernan \u2013 Tier 2 York Research Chair in Mathematics of Immunity and Infectious Disease<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heffernan has a body of work in the field of infectious disease modelling. In her YRC research program, Heffernan will develop models of immunity against infection \u2013 both in individuals and in populations \u2013 which can be used to quantify distributions of immunity and its protective effects.
