Pullano and Chaudhry received a Gold Medal, which is presented to Science students graduating with the highest GPA, and Frias received the Silver Medal, which goes to a Science student who has combined the highest degree of academic achievement with the greatest contribution to undergraduate student life at York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"860\" height=\"861\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Areeba-Chaudhry-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Areeba Chaudhry\" class=\"wp-image-27475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Areeba-Chaudhry-edited.jpg 860w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Areeba-Chaudhry-edited-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Areeba-Chaudhry-edited-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 860px) 100vw, 860px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Areeba Chaudhry<\/strong> - Gold Medal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chaudhry, who majored in biomedical science, received the prestigious regional McCall MacBain and Life Science Ontario scholarships for her leadership and research experiences during her time at York. She also received three NSERC Undergraduate Summer Research Awards, and in 2022, received second prize for best oral presentation at the Faculty\u2019s Undergraduate Summer Research Conference. On campus, Chaudhry represented the student voice as an elected member of the Science Student Caucus, served as a Peer Mentor, and was hired as a PASS Leader to create supplementary lessons for first-year biology students. In fall 2023, she will be starting medical school at the University of Toronto to pursue her dream of becoming a physician.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"767\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Sarah-Pullano-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Sarah Pullano\" class=\"wp-image-27477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Sarah-Pullano-edited.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Sarah-Pullano-edited-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Sarah-Pullano-edited-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sarah Pullano<\/strong> \u2013 Gold Medal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pullano, who majored in biology, received the York University President's Scholarship, the Toronto Transportation Club Scholarship, and the LiUNA! Local 183 Scholarship over her four years at York. In her last year of study, she became more involved by joining the Bethune College Council, which she says, \u201ctaught me the importance of building a sense of community during my undergraduate career.\u201d During her final semester, she began volunteering in a lab, which ignited her interest in research and inspired to pursue an MSc at York under the supervision of Professor Nikola Kovinich in the Department of Biology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"784\" height=\"784\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Nicole-Frias-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Nicole-Frias-edited.jpg 784w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Nicole-Frias-edited-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Nicole-Frias-edited-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 784px) 100vw, 784px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nicole Frias<\/strong> - Silver Medal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Frias, who majored in biochemistry, was the top student graduating from any program in the Department of Chemistry this year. The letters from her research mentors, with whom she held NSERC Undergraduate Summer Research Awards, highlighted how her exceptional intellect and natural curiosity enabled her to make significant research contributions as an undergraduate researcher, including co-authoring a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2023\/ob\/d2ob01956f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peer-reviewed publication<\/a>. She also received the 2023 Canadian Society for Chemistry Silver Medal for her high academic standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frias received the 2019 Student Life award for her contributions to the campus life of undergraduate students. She also served as a Science Ambassador, which involved meeting with prospective students and parents and working on social media campaigns, and as an Orientation Leader at Bethune College.
