{"id":9255,"date":"2021-07-08T14:26:23","date_gmt":"2021-07-08T18:26:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/?p=9255"},"modified":"2021-07-13T09:57:44","modified_gmt":"2021-07-13T13:57:44","slug":"faculty-of-science-researchers-recognized-with-york-research-chair-appointments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/2021\/07\/08\/faculty-of-science-researchers-recognized-with-york-research-chair-appointments\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty of Science researchers recognized with York Research Chair appointments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Four Faculty of Science researchers have been recognized with <a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/2021\/07\/07\/york-university-announces-14-york-research-chair-appointments\/?utm_source=YFile_Email&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;utm_content=Top-Stories&amp;utm_campaign=yfile\">York Research Chair (YRC) appointments<\/a> for the term of 2021-2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mathematics &amp; Statistics professor <strong>Nantel Bergeron<\/strong> and Biology professors <strong>Chun Peng<\/strong> and <strong>Amro Zayed<\/strong> had their Tier 1 YRCs renewed. Physics &amp; Astronomy associate professor<strong> Ozzy Mermut<\/strong> was appointed as Tier 2 York Research Chair in Vision Biophotonics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fourteen researchers across the University were awarded YRCs in this current cohort. YRCs are the University\u2019s internal counterpart to the national Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program, which recognizes outstanding researchers. This group of YRCs belong to the eighth cohort of researchers to be appointed since the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/york-research-chairs\/\">establishment of the program<\/a>\u00a0in 2015. The YRCs\u2019 terms start July 1 and run through to June 30, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled that our researchers are among the recipients of these prestigious appointments from York University,\u201d says Vivian Saridakis, Associate Dean, Research &amp; Graduate Education, Faculty of Science. \u201cThese YRCs will enable our leading scientists to continue important contributions to areas such as women\u2019s reproductive health, diagnostics for age-related degenerative diseases, applied algebra, and the linkages between pollinator health and sustainability of our food supply.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2021\/07\/Screen-Shot-2021-07-08-at-4.11.20-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9297\" width=\"228\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2021\/07\/Screen-Shot-2021-07-08-at-4.11.20-PM.png 414w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2021\/07\/Screen-Shot-2021-07-08-at-4.11.20-PM-300x288.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nantel Bergeron<\/strong><br><strong>Tier 1 York Research Chair in Applied Algebra<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Nantel Bergeron<strong>,&nbsp;<\/strong>Faculty of Science, had his York Research Chair in Applied Algebra renewed.&nbsp;He is one of the pioneers in the development of the theory of combinatorial Hopf algebras. In this field, researchers can understand and solve complex enumeration problems from other areas of science, such as computer science and mathematics. His research helps to further insights into the super-symmetry of nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2021\/07\/Chun.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9259\" width=\"207\" height=\"207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2021\/07\/Chun.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2021\/07\/Chun-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chun Peng<\/strong><br><strong>Tier 1 York Research Chair in Women\u2019s Reproductive Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peng\u2019s long-term goal for her research program is to understand the regulation of female reproduction and the mechanisms underlying the development of ovarian cancer and preeclampsia. Her group develops diagnostics and therapeutic biophotonics technologies to address age-related degenerative diseases. These techniques translate to accelerated aging studies in the environment of space, to understand long-term health consequences in space. This is a VISTA York Research Chair; Mermut is a core member of&nbsp;the Vision: Science to Applications (VISTA) program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The YRC program seeks to build research recognition and capacity, with excellence in research, scholarship and associated creative activity serving as selection criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tier I YRCs are open to established research leaders at the rank of full professor.
