POSITION TITLE: Lead Student Transition Assistant (x3 Positions Available)

UNIT & DEPARTMENT: New Student Transition & Orientation, Student Community and Leadership Development

NUMBER OF POSITIONS: 1 Summer & Fall/Winter Position 

RATE OF PAY: Summer = $17.00, Fall/Winter = $16.00

EMPLOYMENT TERM: SUMMER POSITIONS: Late March 2022 – September 2022 (Start Date Negotiable) and SUMMER + FALL/WINTER: Late Mach 2022 – April 2023 (Start Date Negotiable)

HOURS OF WORK:  Summer Term = 34 hours per week. Fall/Winter term = 10-15 hours per week.

LOCATION: The position is intended to work on-campus and those interested should only apply if they can be present on the Keele campus during designated work hours.  In the event the university decides to pivot to a remote work environment again, SCLD will determine how to best utilize staff to continue to run operations.

The Work Study Student program provides on-campus job opportunities for eligible York University undergraduate students. Work Study Student employees are provided opportunities to contribute to support roles while developing valuable, relevant skills and work experience for the workplace. These roles offer a learning and development opportunity for Work Study Student employees to receive experiential on-the-job training, guidance and mentorship. Under the guidance of permanent staff members, Work Study Student employees will provide support to their relevant department/faculty in clerical, administrative and technical capacities. As part of your Work-Study/LEAP experience, you will participate in Becoming YU, a program designed to support students in: 

• Creating meaningful goals and objectives

 • Recognizing the value of their personal, academic, and professional experiences

• Identifying their competencies and skills; and

 • Articulating their skills and experiences with confidence. Becoming YU includes regular meetings with your student employment supervisor/coach for reflecting on your progress and getting valuable feedback

ABOUT THE TRANSITION PROGRAM AT YORKU: 

The Transition Program at York University oversees a variety events, workshops, and programs to assist new students as they transition to York University. YU Start is a collaborative program designed to support new students during their transition to university and help them succeed in their first year. The overarching goal of the Transition Programming is to improve student satisfaction, engagement and preparedness to successfully begin university studies by providing a planned, coordinated and integrated set of learning activities and opportunities aimed at developing capacities.  The program includes the YU START Online Enrolment Tutorial, the YU START University 101 Platform, an online Discussion Board and Facebook Groups; and, York Orientation Day.

JOB DESCRIPTION: 

Reporting to the New Student Transition Coordinator, the Lead Student Transition Assistant  will work as part of a team that plays an integral role in the operationalization of the YU Start Program, Transition and Orientation Events, and the YorkU Online Community. The Lead Student Transition Assistant will be responsible for the supervision and peer mentoring of the Transition team, supporting the annual assessment of all programming, serving as a resource for new students, responsible for the planning and execution of events (York 101 Workshops, Parent Orientation, York Orientation Day, Campus Tours), workshops and support the curation of new content for YU Start. The Student Transition Assistant (s), with support from the New Student Transition Coordinator, will be responsible for the intake, training and support of the Transition Leaders (student leaders from within the Faculties who help support the University’s Transition Programming). Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as an online mentor/resource for the new YorkU Online Community as well as analyze usage data to identify trends
  • Plan and execute training on required platforms for the Transition Team (Slack, SIS, Project Management Software)
  • In collaboration with the Media and Communications Team at SCLD, create social media strategy and content for new engaging students
  • Collaborate with campus partners to curate content for the YU Start Platform
  • Assist with the creation, distribution, and analysis of Transition Programming
  • Compile survey data into comprehensive presentations
  • Plan and execute various Transition Events and Workshops (i.e. York 101, Parent Orientaation)
  • Assist with the conducting of focus groups to evaluate new ideas
  • Plan and execute training for incoming Transition Leaders 
  • Assist with some early stages of logistical planning for York Orientation Day

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Understanding of needs of transitioning/new students
  • Facilitation skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Organization skills
  • Interpersonal skills, including tact and diplomacy
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills 
  • Project management skills
  • Experience providing training and supporting Peer Leaders and Volunteers 
  • Working knowledge of and experience with social media platforms
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative
  • Event Planning experience (preferably on campus event planning)
  • Microsoft Suite experience 

MANDATORY TRAINING DATES: May 2nd and May 3rd (New Student Transition Training) Tentatively May 6th, 2022 (PLT), Tentatively May 13th, 2022 (Division of Students Welcome)
