No matter what kind of exam you're facing, your best strategy is always to thoroughly understand the course material. Then, review and study with the type of exam in mind, if you can, and practice applying your knowledge through self-testing in the same format. Multiple choice often focuses on the details, make notes of times, names, and dates. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PRACTICE:<\/strong> Create possible exam questions based on previous tests\/assignments to get an idea of the question format as well as the depth of details. Test yourself and practice the questions out of their original order! <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of Multiple-Choice Questions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Question Type<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>What is it Testing?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/td><td><strong>How to Study?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Recognition\/ Recall<\/td><td>Knowledge from lectures and text.<\/td><td>Test yourself by recalling information without looking at your notes or by teaching concepts to another person.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Comprehension<\/td><td>How concepts are related to each other, compare or contrast information.<\/td><td>Elaborate and draw connections between concepts and evidence.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Elaboration and Application<\/td><td>Your understanding of the relationship between a theory and its evidence and applying this understanding to a hypothetical situation or case study.<\/td><td>Practice solving problems, creating your own examples, elaborating and thinking creatively.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Writing a Multiple Choice Exam<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Managing your time<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Divide the time accordingly for each question (e.g., If you have 75 MC questions and 90 minutes to complete, ideally you would want to spend 1 minute for each question and the last 15 minutes to review your work).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave at least 15 minutes at the end for review \u2013 set an alarm if you can or keep an eye on the clock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don't stay too long on one question. If the exam format allows you to go back, work on the easiest questions first and mark the difficult ones clearly so you can come back to them at the end. Instead, chose moderate statements (\u2018a few\u2019, \u2018often\u2019) or numbers in the middle of the range.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select \u2018all of the above\u2019 if you think at least one of the options is true and \u2018none of the above\u2019 if none of the options look familiar or plausible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check for look-alike options or opposite options; one of them is usually the answer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Options which seem foolish or completely unfamiliar are likely incorrect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go with your gut instinct if you really have no idea, move on to the next question, and let it go.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-pane kt-accordion-pane kt-accordion-pane-4 kt-pane758_a00e34-a4\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-header-wrap\"><button class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-header kt-acccordion-button-label-show\" type=\"button\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title-wrap\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title\">Short Answer Exams<\/span><\/span><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-icon-trigger\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel kt-accordion-panel-hidden\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel-inner\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Study Guidelines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>DETAILS:<\/strong> Short answer exams focus on the details. Try using cue cards and study notes to help you remember the details while keeping in mind big picture themes and concepts to help you organize and understand the information. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Writing the Exam <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>READ:<\/strong> Read all instructions very carefully and read through the entire exam to budget your time according to how many marks questions are worth. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>STRATEGIZE: <\/strong>Start with the easiest question to help you relax and think clearly! <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TIME: <\/strong>Leave time at the end to read through your exam.\u00a0 Correct any errors and misplaced words which could hamper comprehension of your answer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-pane kt-accordion-pane kt-accordion-pane-5 kt-pane758_09796c-02\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-header-wrap\"><button class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-header kt-acccordion-button-label-show\" type=\"button\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title-wrap\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title\">Essay Exams<\/span><\/span><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-icon-trigger\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel kt-accordion-panel-hidden\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel-inner\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Study Guidelines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>UNDERSTAND:<\/strong> Study how concepts connect together and then work to fill in the smaller details. Use the syllabus to remind yourself of the overall themes or course goals, and connect these to what topics were emphasized in lecture. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>QUESTION:<\/strong> create practice questions drawing on past tests, assignments, and projects. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CREATE:<\/strong> Use mind maps or graphic organizers to visually organize the material to help you understand connections between big ideas. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Writing the Exam <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>READ: <\/strong>Read all instructions very carefully before responding, reading through the entire exam to give yourself an idea of what you will be working through. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ORGANIZE: <\/strong>Create an outline before you begin writing, underline key words from the questions, and organize your thoughts into supporting paragraphs based on the evidence you remember. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>STRATEGIZE:<\/strong> Look at how many marks each question is worth and determine how much time you spend on questions according to this. Start with an easy question first to boost your confidence! <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-pane kt-accordion-pane kt-accordion-pane-6 kt-pane758_371db7-e6\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-header-wrap\"><button class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-header kt-acccordion-button-label-show\" type=\"button\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title-wrap\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title\">Math &amp; Science Exams<\/span><\/span><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-icon-trigger\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel kt-accordion-panel-hidden\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel-inner\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Study Guidelines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>REVIEW:<\/strong> Review all formulae, understand how they relate to each other and how to incorporate information from one formula to help you solve another. Remember big picture themes and review past question and solutions. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PRACTICE:<\/strong> Old tests are a great way to find practice problems, and ask your prof what they recommend! Practice setting timers for yourself to complete the questions under pressure. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PREPARE:<\/strong> Find out if you are allowed to bring a formula sheet into the exam. Make sure you prepare everything you need for the exam ahead of time, like calculators and pencils! <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Writing the Exam <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>READ:<\/strong> Read the instructions carefully.\u00a0 Do you need to answer all the questions or do you have a choice?\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>STRATEGIZE<\/strong>: Dump any information you are afraid you might forget.\u00a0 Write down formulas, processes, etc. on the back of the exam paper.\u00a0 This will help to reduce your anxiety as you won\u2019t be in danger of blanking on the material half way through the exam. If you get stuck on a question mark it, move on, and come back to it at the end.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TRANSLATE:<\/strong> Translate problems into English (instead of variables and ratios) and take time to read through them carefully. Write down what you know from the problem.\u00a0 This may help you see which variables you\u2019ve been given and therefore which formula to use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>DRAW: <\/strong>Make a picture.\u00a0 Visual representations can help unblock your mind and may get you part marks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CHECK YOUR WORK: <\/strong>You don\u2019t want to lose marks for not carrying a 1!\u00a0 Start by estimating the answer.\u00a0Does the answer you arrived at make sense?
