C4 brings focus to interprofessional collaboration

The Cross-Campus Capstone Classroom (C4) values the importance of interprofessional collaboration as it brings together individuals from different backgrounds to work towards achieving common goals while solving complex, real-world problems.  

C4 will be hosting information sessions for the launch of its 2022/23 Fall/Winter courses. Sessions will take place every Wednesday until Sept. 7 from 10 to 11 a.m. The next information session will take place on July 13, where prospective C4 students can explore interprofessional collaboration in the classroom.  

By applying this method of collaboration in the C4 classrooms, students develop and hone transferable skills while learning the value of multiple perspectives and approaches to research, design and problem solving. Students come together from across campus to work in small teams on real-world problems with social impact. 

While some students may lack hands-on work experience during their undergraduate studies and only participate in interdisciplinary team environments once they’re employed, C4 fills these gaps and gives students an advantage by exposing them to an applied learning environment that promotes intellectual diversity before graduation.  

This competitive edge allows students to stand out in job interviews and excel in the workforce.

“My C4 project significantly impacted how I landed my current job as a data analyst. It not only taught me the essential hard skills of project management (like determining scope, project charter and agile PM [project management] techniques), but it also taught me the necessary soft skills like empathy, leadership and emotional intelligence,” said recent Bachelor of Health Studies grad, Shayandeep Das, who participated in C4 from 2020-21. “All of these are necessary to succeed in an interdisciplinary work environment. In the current job market, there is a high probability that your job will entail you to work with people from various academic backgrounds and C4 serves as one of the best launchpads for this.”  

Transferring these skills from the classroom to the workplace mirrors how CEOs and hiring managers have prioritized encouraging employees to think beyond their professional backgrounds to bring contrasting perspectives and approaches to the table as effective interprofessional collaboration is both necessary and critical in today’s changing job landscape. 

Along with earning York credits, C4 students can also earn micro-credential learning badges from IBM Canada as well as participate in an Experience Ventures Entrepreneurial Thinking Placement. Both unique opportunities help C4 students stand out as agents of change and equip them with the skills and experiences they need to enter today’s job market.  
 
Applications for C4’s Fall/Winter courses are now open. Students in their third, fourth and/or final years of study are encouraged to apply. There are three sections to choose from: Mondays 8:30 to11:30 a.m., Tuesdays 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Fridays 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.
