Email Spam Filter for faculty & staff

A spam filter is in place for faculty and staff email.

How do I get it?

All @yorku.ca email address automatically have a spam filter enabled. The central spam filter does not affect mail delivered to individuals using other departmental or Faculty email.

The UIT spam filter will move any message tagged as spam to a folder called Yspam-found. You should scan this folder regularly to ensure that no email message was wrongly tagged as spam. The system will delete messages in this folder that are older than 14 days.

The spam filter also allows you to submit samples of email that have either NOT been caught by the spam filter OR has been caught in error. This will help us to train our central filters.  Two other folders have been created for you:

  • Yspam-learn: YOU save email here that was delivered to your Inbox that is considered to be spam.
  • Yspam-unlearn: YOU save email that you believe was erroneously delivered to your Junk folder.  
    You should also save a copy in another folder to protect against losing the message.

These two folders will be checked nightly. The main filter will be updated accordingly, and then the messages will be deleted from the two folders.

York's spam filter screens out hundreds of thousands of spam messages every day however inevitably some messages will get past the spam filter. If you still have a problem with spam consider using a mail reader that has additional built-in spam controls like Mozilla Thunderbird

NEVER SHARE YOUR ACCOUNT LOGIN INFORMATION

York University (along with most other educational institutions world-wide) continues to be the target of ongoing fraudulent emails. These messages pose as University email or helpdesk administrators, and ask for name and password information or may even appear to come from legitimate York email accounts such as askit@yorku.ca. You may also notice similar fraudulent messages posing to be from popular on-line services such as ebay, paypal, Canada Revenue Agency officials and financial institutions. If you receive such a message, DO NOT reply or click on any links, just delete the message.
