“Policy Perspectives on Education for Sustainable Development”
As the world reflects on momentum from the Summit of the Future and the remaining five years of the SDG timeline, we find a moment to contemplate the field of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and its emerging tensions and opportunities. Although ESD has become a priority in national education policies, and is cited as a key driver to the UN’s global development agenda, what progress has been made in moving the world towards sustainable development? Have policies adequately transitioned to practice? Has policy production been sufficient to achieve global goals? A new special issue of the Journal of Education for Sustainable Development (JESD) endeavors to explore the nuance of the policy-practice continuum in relation to ESD and whether or not we are progressing towards global goals in effective, efficient, and transformative ways.
The special issue “Policy Perspectives on Education for Sustainable Development”–in partnership with the SDG Academy at the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Columbia University, and York University–seeks to offer reflections along these lines. The special issue, representing scholars in 9 countries from over 21 institutions, ultimately aims to offer pathways forward and serve as a space for deliberation and debate related to ESD plans and priorities, particularly within the framework of the SDGs.
Please join the SDG Academy, York University, and Columbia University, in partnership with the UNESCO Chair at The George Washington University’s International Education Program, for the virtual launch of the special issue on April 23rd at 10 AM ET. Speakers will discuss their contributions and inspire dialogue about the successes, challenges, and opportunities for policies related to ESD. The editors and authors of the special issue seek to share unique perspectives on ESD and foster an open discussion with the community.
