Students to build giant red heart out of balloons

Today, York Federation of Students is building a giant red heart made from 60,000 balloons in Vanier Field, the site of Red Week. If they succeed, the heart will set the Guinness World Record for the biggest 3D balloon structure ever built.

Building the giant heart kicks off the YFS’ "Stop The Hate" campaign to combat, racism, anti-Semitism, Islamphobia, sexism and homophobia, says Hodari Reuben Clarke, YFS vice-president, campus life. Inside the giant red heart will be the words "Stop The Hate".

Construction starts at 11:30am on the basketball court between York Lanes and Vanier College.

The YFS has dubbed Sept. 12 "Show Me the Love Day". It is the last of a four-day York-wide orientation organized by the YFS on Sept. 6, 7, 11 and 12.

The Guinness record for largest balloon structure used 58,942 balloons.
