Learn about York's safety and security services on Safety Awareness Day

York University will host its second annual Safety Awareness Day information fairs at the Keele and Glendon campuses successively on Sept. 28 and 29.

On Sept. 28, from 11am to 5pm, campus providers of personal safety services will offer interactive and informative displays featuring giveaways in Vari Hall, the Link and Central Square on the Keele campus. The event will then move to the Glendon campus on Sept. 29, from 10am to 2pm in the York Hall Cafeteria.

Visitors will have an opportunity to enter a contest to win prizes. The event is open to all students, faculty and staff.

"Safety Awareness Days offer a great opportunity to learn more about safety-related services that are available on the Keele and Glendon campuses," says Katherine Branton, manager of York's Emergency Preparedness Program and one of the organizers of the event. "We bring all the groups together in one convenient location. It is a one-stop shop for all information related to being safe both on and off campus."

This is the second annual Safety Awareness Day event and Branton says this year will feature more interactive displays and giveaways.  "The fire prevention office will be offering a demonstration on how to use a fire extinguisher and there will be a demonstration on back safety," says Branton.

"There will also be a very interesting and important demonstration on how to use an automated external defibrillator  or AED," she says. "An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias in someone and is able to treat them through defibrillation, which allows the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm."

Branton says members of the Office of Emergency Preparedness will be on site to demonstrate how to put together an emergency preparedness kit for the home and car.
