Angie Quick brings emotional art experience to York U

York University’s Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change (EUC) will welcome London, Ont.-based artist Angie Quick as the Faculty’s 2025 Artist-in-Residence, beginning Jan. 21.

Known for her evocative, emotionally charged paintings that explore intimacy and human connection, Quick’s residency is poised to enrich York’s vibrant arts community and inspire students to view the human experience through a creative lens.

Quick’s residency program, “I Can’t Come to the Party If I Won’t Fall in Love,” leads up to EUC’s Eco Arts Festival in March and is part of Professor Andil Gosine's Nature’s Wild exhibition series, which features a student exhibition.

The Artist-in-Residence program at EUC aims to foster dialogue between the arts, social change and environmental justice.

The residency will launch with an exhibition opening and artist talk on Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. at York’s Cross Road Gallery and Zig Zag Lounge. Quick’s work invites audiences to explore the emotional undercurrents of celebrations – spaces where vulnerability and connection emerge amidst the revelry.

“The party serves as a transformative moment catalyzing a profound exploration of our individual experiences and emotional landscapes,” says Quick. “While the celebration unfolds around us, the atmosphere becomes charged with unspoken truths and vulnerabilities that resonate deeply within us.”

From 3 to 4 p.m., participants can witness Quick’s Psychic Watercolour Performance, an intimate and interactive session where she creates personalized watercolour paintings for up to 10 attendees, capturing their “fortunes” through psychic expression.

On Jan. 22 from 2 to 3 p.m., Quick will host an Intuitive Painting Workshop, offering students and participants the chance to explore gestural watercolour techniques. Through hands-on activities, attendees will create pieces that channel their desires and dreams, uncovering new ways to connect with their inner narratives.

Both the performance and workshop are RSVP-only due to limited spots, ensuring an intimate and impactful experience for all participants. To reserve a spot, contact hatemh@yorku.ca.
